Ask and you shall receive....
![]() Pink line is nearfield. Blue line is some watts at some metres (maybe 2 metres from the horn mouth) and is the one you really want to pay attention to... |

If you speak to Dave nicely he might even post up the acabak simulation he did and see how they compare... Pretty sure the sim has the same dip...
That plot was with a 15l (not including driver displacement) rear chamber. Definately needs to be smaller. |

did you check coherence for this plot? it could have been off at 250hz, especially if you are indoors. My back chamber is as small as it could be to fit the driver in. What frequency does the low roll off? its not too bad really - i've seen much worse from "pro" cabs. i'l try a 3db dip centred at 500hz next time i get them out as the plot suggests. |

Plot was taken outside and was the same on the off axis plots as well. Since the dip is also present on the nearfield (at horn mouth) measurement I can't see that it's anything to do with cancellations.
It's a long time since we did the plots but I think there will of been some filters in place, but at a frequency above/below the natural roll off. |

not the best simulation in the world but it's reasonable this is with an 8l rear chamber and what we've used in the final build but the results from other sims show that between 3 and 5l is best (8l being the upper limit before it starts getting ugly) on a side note i used 12Kg of rice to find out that the SN-12B displaces 3l and there's 1.5l contained within the cone itself |

Dave: i made a Akabak sim but it looks different to your, mine rolloff at 1khz much like the plot and i only have 1dB of ripple.
Dom: did you use a ECM8000 for the measurement? Honestly i tought PH had a better response but i see it's useable only to 800hz. i was thinking to buy 4 porn mids but looking at this plots i think i'm not sure as before to use them. What about sound quality? They're good for rock? Is that 250hz dip audible? Anyway i was thinking to use 18 Sound 12MB700 because i already have 4 of them and using a 4L sealed rear chamber made of alu. Maybe 18 Sound could be better than P.Audio and with a such small rear chamber the plot would be much more linear. What do you think? Regards, Giorgio |

we tried playing metal through some porns we borrowed, and decided v,quickly that for guitars and that kind of music in general they just didnt cut the mustard. maybey we just dont hav e enough experience to get the best out of them but realy i wasnt impressed. [hides behind wall]

Coner can you tell me more info about the system you played? Driver used, xover freq, amp used, etc.
And what did you not like of the sound of the porn? the low-mid, the mid, the mid-high, the high, the overall performance, lack of transients, too much distorsion, canny or "horny" sound, etc. Thank you :) |

well i dont know too much we just borrowed [well a mate brought a pair along] im pressuming they were standared porns [sn12 or whatever the driver is] i think we only realy messed around with the x-over [mid - hi] a little between 800hz and 1.2 khz [where there seemed to be a gap] we were runing em over 4 v-18 loaded 1850s powered [iirc i might be wrong i wasnt too close to the rack that much that night because i was alitlle worsce for wear] i think they on ly played with the x-over between the bass and mid at around 120hz<160hz. they seemed to have a reasonable kick but strugled i felt around the upper end [700hz and up im guesing you need something inbetween the comp and 12, other wise your putting alot of the guitars through the comp, and if you use a 6 or 8" inbetween you risk [well not risk you do] x-ing over in the vocal area maybey twice [depends on how heigh your upper mid will get before the comp] i believe the porns are due a 6.5" upper mid soon [dont quote me] and i believe we didnt give them a fair test. we had a bad selection of amps [old pv cs800 for mids and a carlsboro 500 for tops both on the way out] and we run in mono . so realy im v.biased. they are a damn good box if you know how to use em, and i will reconsider them when the 6.55" upper mid becomes availabe. |
