Hi when stacking the 1850s how close do they have to be to each other? I was thinking of putting rubber corner bumbers on them which would mean that there would be a small gap between the speakers when stacked (maybe 60mm between the outside edges). Would this effect the performance very much?

it won't make any difference upto about 6 inches apart from there you start to lose proper coupling of the horns and from half a wavelength and above you'll run into phase cancellation issues |

would leaving a 5" gap effectively make the mouth of the horn larger? |

Hi, Horns need to touch if the horn path is to be extended. This will also incease mouth area. If there are large gaps then you have made a port between the cabs and it gets really hard to predict what is happening. But two identical sound sources played within 1/4 WL will couple. So even if the horns are 86 cm apart everything below 100 Hz will couple.

So you will have the '+3dB thing' but not the low end extension, me guess.

Or the '+6dB thing' if you take doubling of power into account too.... :)

yeap, if horns are aprat you get the gain but not the extension. 3 dB from the doubling of power and 3 dB from the doubling of sensitvity. So +6dB, but only within the coupling distance. |

does this effect the extension even if the gap is a few mm. [ie the corners] or is it over an inch say? might seem like a daft question, but it may explain blown drivers on odd ocassions. ie "air leaks" in the stack [a few mm gap by not getting a perfect stackin on uneven floor] and settil hp at what it should be when coupled.

No, that is not a problem. Even 4" shouldn't be a problem...
