greetings to all, after reading the FAQ I still have a doubt on which is best. We want to build a 4 basscabs plus 2xmid/hi's soundsystem to play Reggae. The 3 options for bass: 1- 4x1850 horn (if possible loaded with void) 2- 4x18 super scooper (can we use void in these?) 3- 2x1850horn and some G Sub's??? Are these the most useable combinations or can you suggest me a better one? We want to build something useable in and outdoor hence my doubt since Rog says that 1850 horn may sound strange if you use them in small venues. Since most Reggae/Dub soundsystem I've seen work with scoopers I'd be more inclined for it but I'd like to know if there are other ways to reach a chest thumping/deep bass configuration around 4k. thank you!

Hi, I hate to say it but if you are only going to play reggae then the scoppers should be the best bet. Folded horns like the 1850 horn can sound bad with reggae unless you use loads of them. Reggae recordings do not have much lows and too much upper bass, so scoops suit and make it sound better. Its got a lot to do with why the reordings were mastered that way in the forst place. Rog. |

Thank you very much for the reply Rog! You are helping us to start the construction of the very first independently built soundsystem in Portugal! I know we're kinda late but better later than never. So going for the scoopers is the best in this case... I still have a tiny doubt about this: Will some Dancehall tunes(with harder kicks) sound good on this system? If not can we make it up by adding any other type of upper bass cab? For the tech spec: 1-Can we load them with the Void's 1k or should we stick to the PD1850? 2-What power amp should we get to go along the 4 speakers. Is it better to operate the bass mono or stereo? Doesn't this matter on how powerful your amp has to be? |

Ahhh, Now you throw more questions in. All this really depands on what, where and many other things. If the system was going to be uased outside then I would have said 1850 horns. But inside with only 4 horns then scoops. If you can have 6 1850's per side then that will be better than scoops. But if you only have 4 horns for the whole system then go with the scoops. Dancehall is very diffrent from reggae. I would go with the 1850's for this music. Amps, big as you can afford and go summed mono on the bass end. Infinite 8 is a killer for bass. Void or PD 1850. Well, its looking like its a personal choice. For me I like the warmer edge of the V18. I was speaking with someone the other day who tried both and said they liked the harder edge of the 1850. If my system was hard techno then I might go with the PD as it does have a hard attack. But I don't play this music and don't want a headache, so I like the V18. Rog. |

Greetings and thank you once again! I'd heard of the infinite8 and it seems to be at a very good price! My question with the bass amp is: -Would I use it in bridge mode if i wanted to drive the 4 speakers? I could still use it in stereo since a lot of power would be available, right? And what if I upgrade from 4 to 6 speakers, would it still make it(mono/stereo)? My other question is on the Mid/Hi's section. I've seen the MT's on the site but I think they are kinda hard to build( don't know if the scoops are easier...) and most of all they seem to be pretty heavy. -What is the power/features needed to compliment the bins?Could I build some X15 or even X12? How many would I need? -Also, I'd like to have something wich is practical to take and play without the bins. In this case (ie, no bins), would the X15's perform? thanks |

On any amp that will run into 2 ohms per side you can run 4 x 8 ohm drivers per side. You don't need to bridge the Inf 8, just run it in stereo and use 1, 2 ,3, or 4 drivers from each side. " drivers per side is great as this gives you 1200 watts into each driver. 3 drivers per side gives you around 1050 watts into each driver. You could build X15's and use them fullrange. Don't expect to flap your trousers, but it will sound ok if you use enough of them. 3 to 4 per side is good. Rog. |

Hi Rog, thanks for the tips on the bass! will I need to build 2 X15's for each bassbin? Won't I end up with too many of these speakers, 8 in this case? Is there any other alternative you might suggest? We are getting ready to buy the wood and start working on the bins!

If you are going to use 4 scoops, then you want at least 4 X15s on top. |

I am going for that as a start. Now, will I be able to amplify the 4 with an amp that gives 2x800 @2ohm? How do I hook each pair so that I get and impedance of 2ohm. If I simply put each 2 in pararell, won't I get a pair which is 4ohm? Would I be better off doing this and getting a third amp for the hi's or trying to get a bigger amp and run the X15's (mid and hi) on that, making use of the internal crossover?? Thanks |

if you run 2x 8ohm driver in parrallel you will get total of 4ohm resistance.......4x 8ohm driver = total of 2ohm resistance......if you run all four from one channel which produces 800W @ 2ohms you will only give 200W to each driver....for drivers like the 1850 i reckon you will want more like 1000W per driver.....even if you just put 2 in parrallel from one channel at a total resistance of 4ohms....the amp puts 800W into 2ohm per channel therefore around 4-500W at 4ohms per channel....still only = bout 200W per driver..... ...hang on.....are we talking about the X15's or the scoops here? if its the scoops as i initially thought you could bridge the amp to put out 1600W at 4ohm and use this to power two scoops in parallel at 800w each.... ....if its the X15's ....if each cab has a 15" and a tweeter then isn't the total resistance of each cab around 4ohms? in which case 2 from each side would give 400W/cabinet to 4 X15's....this is probablly enough to get some good sound from them but i haven't used any and i'm not even too sure of the power ratings of the drivers....... ...anyone got any?? hope this is of some use... cheers |

I was talking about the X15's and what I was unsure about was if each one had 4ohm or 8ohm to start with. Since I plan to build 2x2cabs I would really need each pair to be at 2ohm so I could use this amp I've seen (2x800 @2ohm). So, how's a X15 rated, 8 or 4 ohms, or anything else? The amp in question is a QSC-PLX1602 2nd hand from the store at 650€. If I'm giving each X15 aprox.400W is this enough to have them running at full power or I'd be better off with another amp? My options would probably go for Behringer EP2500 (2x1200@2ohm). I've seen what Rog wrote about them but would risk it since its for mid's and they're cheap. As for the bass, prob Infinite8... Peace, Silworm |

An X15, run passively, is 8ohms... Run actively and bi amped, the low section will be 8 ohms and the tops will be 8 ohms... |
