for good ply your looking at 45/55quid a sheet from b&q and that does get you some free cuts too but they also do exterior ply at 30/35quid a sheet
tbh if your not throwing them about alot i.e on tour yout gonna be fine with the exterior ply but if you plan on these cabs being used on the road i would go for the birch ply from b&q

well theres around 20quid difference per sheet so its not that much, for 2 1850s you will need 3 and a half sheets

B&Q is the overpriced alternative for people who do not live near a decent plywood importer. You should be able to get it for less than £40 a sheet anywhere in SE England.

Most people i've spoken to about budget builds (I never have money) say unless your building a proffessional rig to cater for 100's then its not worth it. I only have a small stack of 4 bins and some mids/midtops so just used exterior ply and varnished it. Seems to have held up a few months so far

Today I had to cut up three sheets of exterior ply that came from B&Q (to use for shuttering around a patio and other garden features) and gotta say I wouldn't like to build cabs from it! More voids and loose knots than you can shake a stick at!
Go for the birch! Just find a Timber supplier in your local area. |

Used WBP recently for some cabs. It's OK, but to be honest the voids get awkward with angles etc.
Jewsons do Wisa Twin. Birch outers, soft inners, very eco friendly. £33 plus VAt if you ask nicely.
It is also quite light and has very few voids.
Big Jewsons have sawmills too.

I buy Birch Ply by the crate (22 sheets) and I get it for £31.00 per sheet.

which is fine unless the saw at your nearest b&q is anything like my local...manned by stubborn idiots and not correctly calibrated, ie. cuts will differ as much as +-3mm from top to bottom. The best thing I ever did was buying a festool and making all the cuts myself. I used to work as a scenic chippy building sets for theatre. We would use very cheap ply, like that mentioned previously, as it would only by needed for 3/4 weeks at a time. The quality was so poor you could make it warp just from looking at it! I would also regularly cut through thin pieces of metal found within the laminates. Another problem was screwing into the endgrain because of the large amopunt of voids. Would never consider using it for speaker cabinets. Birch or MDF. |
