Need to get my mind sortet on wich drivers i should get for a set of X12's.
I'm buying from Thomann, so my choice is confined to there product range.
I have my eyes on these drivers: RCF L12/854K What driver i choose is still not decided.
Wich of these will be the best choice?
The X12 need to go down to at least 100hz flat. And will always be on top of two Cubo15. So LF capability is not so critical ;) Let me have it boys :)

Crescendo 12MB might also be an option. Lighter cone so better midrange.
12SB30 will be too heavy a cone and not good in the midrange. The RCF could be a good option. |

I will take the Crescendo 12MB into consideration :)
But the RCF is my best bit so far i think.
And them i am thinking of getting a 2" driver on a small horn + a small bullit HF driver to take the last bit of HF. |

Just found some pics of the X12 you build Ceharden.
What drivers did you use, and is it necessary to change the ports to match the drivers? |

My boxes aren't really X12's, I took the concept and started again.
Drivers are 18Sound 12ND710's (very very efficient drivers) and the HF is a P.Audio SD740N on an 18Sound XT1464 flare. If you're using the cabs with subs, then the porting becomes less of an issue as you're not using as much of the port output. You just need to tune the cab so that it gives a smooth response. It often makes sense to set the cabinet tuning to be the same as the driver resonant frequency. |

Okay i see :)
I will always use the X12 with subs. Right now i got a set of Cubo215. Later on i will build a set of Cubo15, so have subs for smaller gigs (the Cubo215 is MASSIVE!) If i go for the RCF, will i then be able to build the X12 completly like the original drawing by Rog, and get a good result? Or should there be made some adjustments to the design to get the best out of the drivers??
I have really no idea how any of the software works, so i do not now how to calculate these things.. I am just a builder. Not a designer :) |

think ahead with the horn.. the space for the horn in the x12 plan is very small.. you'll probably end up with a bigger horn, therefore a bigger / taller box.. and so some adjustments to size anyway.. so you may as well rethink the tuning.
i also intend on getting into building similar boxes soon... |

Ceharden, how much are these 18sound 12ND710's? How do you think they would compare with the PD123ER (apart from being louder!)?
Cheers, Rob

Nice drivers you use there Ceharden... I have been checking out the 18sound 12" drivers, but cant get an clear idea which would be best.
I like the 12MB600 and 12W500, 600 and 700. Will they be as good or better than the RCF driver. And will they be a good choice along side a B&C ME45 horn? Edited by Crazy Dane - 20 July 2011 at 7:41pm |

I just found this cab...
http://boyzpc.home.xs4all.nl/Bouwtekeningen/18Sound/2121a%20kast.pdf What do you think of that one? Is that a good alternative to the X12? The 12W700 driver seems to be quite nice :) Edited by Crazy Dane - 20 July 2011 at 7:51pm |

@ Rob:
The 12ND710's are silly money now . However they are possibly still worth it because they weigh almost nothing, are very efficient, very smooth response and a very clean, accurate midrange. Generally a win all round.Note that if you're going to use drivers like the 12ND710 or 12MB700 then the one thing you won't get is a flat response at the low end. Expect the response to start rolling off below around 200Hz and be easily 6dB down by 80-100Hz. This is the trade-off of low end response against overall efficiency. I decided that I was happy to loose out in this area. By careful adjustment of the crossover to the subs and/or a gentle low shelf you can easily fill this area back in. Or, in my case I don't bother because I mainly do live music and as you often end up putting a dip somewhere in the 100-200Hz region in a lot of instruments, having a natural dip saves me some effort! |

I would go ferrite for reduced cost and from the 18Sound range probably the 12MB600 would be the best for the X12.
Also maybe the RCF MB12G301... Almost too much choice! |
