I need an 8TB NAS/DAS/Raid array for my house. Anyone got/seen a cheapish solution? All I really need is a small attractive direct attached (USB) unit, though I wouldn't mind having NAS stuff.

DroboPro looks a worthy look but not so cheap. Allows hot swap hard drives, and allows you to upsize as you need. The Drobo FS 5bay one could make 9+TB using 2.5TB drives using its protection method. about £460 ish + 5 drives at cheapest end around £100 each could have a usable device for £1k ish.
I am assuming that if you are saving up 8TB, that you do not want to lose so easily which means Raid or something similar with the drive-count to make 8TB. Not found much that will do 8TB with some form of redundancy. |

If you build up a Zacate based fileserver you'll have far more flexibility and upgradeability than a NAS / SAN solution. Not to mention the ability to act as a webserver, firewall, torrent server, media server, RAID array, mail server, etc.
Theres a great guide on anandtech.com Will probably work out around the same price as a pre-built "NAS".

True but if shit does hit the fan I don't want to be messing with propriety tech, apparently the drobo is the same too. I have 4x 2TB WD RE4s sitting around. At the moment the choice is between the following:
1. Promise SmartStor NS6400 [£260] - Have one at work and it does the job. http://www.promise.com/storage/raid_series.aspx?region=en-US&m=159&rsn1=3&rsn3=7 2. Take a look at UnRAID. An array with a parity drive which can be expanded on the fly, and if it all falls apart the file system used on the data drives means that they can be plugged into another computer (although you may need to fudge in Reiser support).
