Hi all

What is the best mixer to buy to contend with DJs that like to push a system hard? A local venue has a two void basys systems installed but has had a few issues with drivers popping, probably due to heavy clipping from the mixer they currently have.

Thanks

Surely its more to do with the limiters?

A&H xone series
Pioneer DJM series

are fairly standard for DJ's

formula sound fsm600 can be driven to death and still remains pretty clean

for that price you can get a A and H Xone 62. There is an Ecler AC6 going in the for sale section which in my opinion is a fantastic mixer.
£250-£300 will buy you a FSM600 which is very good and delivers a very clean sound.

I personally avoid Pioneer DJM series... too bloody hot... not worth the money IMO

Allen and heath Xone 62 / 92 though... =)

Ive put my 62 through its paces for years and its never failed me yet... £350 - 400 easy

For that money you have to favour a nice nick Xone 62.

another option could be to use another mixer to get additional clean gain...

I've read of Integral Sound doing this when running DJM series mixers --
they run the DJM through their PDX mixer as a means of getting the proper clean signal to the processing racks....

We use our mixers as a drive mixer firstly because they have a nicer sounding output, second, we can run the Pioneer and A & H mixer lower and not into clipping and most importantly, we can keep the levels in check.

Strange question really!
You can't really contain a Dj's penchant to overdrive a sound system by the choice of mixer, unless it's one like a Formula Sound Modular with a limiter card.
Best configure the PA so it can't be overdriven to damaging levels and then you can choose the DJ mixer to suit your pocket or preference for facilities.

I think regardless of the signal issues, there's no Pioneer mixer I'd want for £400. A djm800 at that price would be so knackered it'd be a paperweight and I've never liked the 600s - which only really leaves the Xone and the FSM - sure there are more options, but it's what would be accepted in a booth. You could also keep your eye out for a Rodec I guess - nice box of pots and faders to bash about with....

Nothing wrong with any of those. It's up to personal preference and neither Allen & heath nor Pioneer, Ecler nor Denon alone will stop a PA from being buggered. The PA must be DJ proof as a pre-requisite.

As a DJ as well as engineer, I prefer Pioneer to use but Allen & Heath to service. Pioneer & Denon are a PITA to fix and A&H are a breeze. But I prefer the tightness of the Pio or Denon for beatmixing over long periods of time...the feel of the knobs, the layout of the controls in a dark booth.
But let's not turn this into another 'this is better than this cos I have one' DJ argument, they are tiresome and pointless.
