Hello.
I am planning on building some 186 horns and was wondering, would it make a difference if i used 18mm ply for the outer panels and 18mm MDF for the inside panels? any info greatly appreciated. Cheers! |

Yes it will make a difference, but how much i don't know. One thing is for sure, it's going to make a hard build, harder. I don't think its worth the trouble. You sure 18mm for both, thats like a double 186 horn with only one driver in it, if your hell bent on it at least try 9mm of each and save your back.

Some audiophiles use ply and mdf sandwiching roofing felt.Makes for very dead heavy structure.

I built my super scoopers as you suggest-birch ply outer panels and mdf internals. I figured it's a good compromise. Saves cash on the MDF internals.. ply is 4o notes a sheet, MDF under 10, and a good few sheets saved over six bins. MDF should also be less resonant. I'm hoping that as the internals are hidden away from knocks that the bins should still live long enough... thinking I should have painted all internals with a sealer though to stop any damp troubles.
Downside is extra weight..And working with MDF-cough :(

I was thinking of doing exactly the same thing to try and keep the cost down. I don't see how it makes the build more complicated though! They're both 18mm, and MDF is slightly easier to work than ply.
Edit: Why would it not last as long? The MDF is completely protected. Edited by Rich2 - 29 November 2006 at 6:54am |

The damp factor... MDF goes mushy n soggy wen water even gets close to it... unless of course you completely seal each piece of MDF before glueing and screwing.

Just paint the parts that might get direct contact with water, as you were probably going to do anyway. Unless you're going to put your cabs in the fog all the time there is no need to seal it.
Over the years, the only spoiled (untreated) MDF I got was standing directly into the water,or water standing directly on it.
