Topic: MT122 / 2'' comp driversPosted: 06 May 2013 at 12:06pm |

Hi,
it was plenty of topics before about HF drivers for MT122 but availability of products is still changing and most of them are no longer sold, so I would like to refresh this matter. MT122 was orginaly designed to be loaded with P.Audio 750N: http://www.p-audio.co.uk/products/P-Audio_PreNeo-750N_100W_2_inch_Throat_Compression_Driver.html Unfortunately this driver is very rare in Europe so I'm looking for the alternatives. I'm planning to load mid 12'' drivers with PD121 or BMS 12N610. I read a lot positive opinion about BMS 2'' drivers, right now I see two available models in regular sale: 2'' BMS 4591 (~ 310 EUR)- http://bmsspeakers.com/fileadmin/bms-data/product_data/compression_drivers/ferrite/bms_4591_t.data.pdf 2'' BMS 4590 (~380 EUR)- http://bmsspeakers.com/fileadmin/bms-data/product_data_2011/compression_drivers_ferrite/bms_4590_2011-04_coaxial_compression_driver.pdf Could you please tell me are them a good drivers to MT122 and whether it makes sense to invest in coaxial version (4590) or standard model (4591) will be sufficient? What king of benefits I get with coax driver? If you have any other suggestions about suitable 2'' drivers with high quality sound - many thx in advance for your recommendations.

BMS 4591 ia a midrange driver. So that is a no.
4590 is about 10kg IIRC so i wont go that way too. Where are you located? Those prices are not really good. If UK based page Tony Wilkes and ask for the 4592. But honestly you could have a really nice results with the 4550 cut at 1Khz in the MT122. Much cheaper solution.

BMS 4592 is available only as a neo version and the prices are extremly high:
http://www.thomann.de/pl/bms_4592nd8.htm Regarding BMS 4590 - you have right, it's almost 10kg, but it only around 7kg more than a neo version. Is it really too much? It's affecting only total cab weight or also a sound quality?

The major difference between te 4590 and 4592, the weight aside, is the depth of the driver and therefore the exit angle of the driver mouth. The 4590 has an angle of roughly a few degrees whereas the 4592 will have a wider angle. When the 4590 and 4592 are coupled to horns the dispersion of the highest frequencies will be largely determined by the exit angle of the driver because of the large 2'' exit.
Since the 4590 has a narrower exit angle, the directivity index will at some point increase and it then becomes irrelevant what dispersion the horn coupled to it has, dispersion will allready be set once the sound leaves the driver. That said i have a few 4590 and i think they rock. Although everybody is using them way low (as far as 500Hz) i cross them at 900 which i think is low enough.

If you are going to drive them really hard I agree that >800hz is wise. As Marjan has stated the 4550 is a really good budget driver for the MT,s Stick em on a Faital LTH102 and you have a nice tight dispersion combo for not a lot of money. Not many folks use the BMS 12N610 in MT's but those that do absolutely rave about them. Tony

Tony, do you have any measurements of the unprocessed response of the 4550 and Faital combo?

OK so I as understand from above discussion BMS 4590 is a great option for MT122 and 4550 is a nice buget variant, am I right?

It all depends on what you need. If you plan on using the HF down to 600-700Hz then 4590 is ok. But if you go down to 1Khz, then i dont see the point on using the 4590.
Another thing, you dont buy BMS at Thomann, They are expensive. Where are you located?

I'm from Poland - maybe Thoman is expensive in BMS, but our local distributors are even 20-30% higher ;) Thamann gives me possibility to buy without VAT so the end price is around 20% less.
Coming back to choosing comp driver - I'm planning to use them with PD121 or BMS 12N610. I heard that I should cut them around 800Hz (please correct me if I'm wrong), so I have to choos BMS 4590 or I will have a gap between 800-1000Hz ??

Wow. Playing with fire here. Cabinet manufacturers aren't allowed to sell drivers to anyone, they can only use them in their own production... Shall we ask from BMS what they think about this? |
