I'm selecting some tweeters for a two-way sound system to cross over with eminence Kappa 15a http://www.eminence.com/pdf/Kappa_15A.pdf - http://www.eminence.com/pdf/Kappa_15A.pdf
I'm looking at: Eminence asd1001 (£25, 50W, rated freq from 2.5KHz) http://www.eminence.com/pdf/asd1001.pdf - http://www.eminence.com/pdf/asd1001.pdf Celestion cdx11446 (£40, 20W, rated freq from 1.5KHz) http://celestion.com/product/127/cdx11446/ - http://celestion.com/product/127/cdx11446/. Do you reckon I could get away with saving some pennies and getting the asd1001 but crossing over at 1.5KHz (a whole KHz below rated range) if I made sure I kept the tweeter below 20W? If not, any suggestions on crossover point, drivers, etc.? I will gladly take any pointers. Thankyou, community!

it might handle the power for a bit, but i can honestly say it will sound aweful being forced to do that range. i would personally look into the eminence psd2002 it will go down to 1.5 k hapily and still get quite loud, but then you will need a horn. its worth doing it right once though, if you use the 1001 you will be buying new tweeters anyways cause inevidibly someones going to get pissed and crank em up just that little bit more.

Only a small thing here, but when you say Tweeters, you mean Compression divers and horns I assume. Tweeters are a different Animal.

heard good things about eminence psd2002 for the price ect, but as for taking any hf units below the frequency range is asking for trouble ie blowing the coil/diaphragm
for example ive got some 2402 and hf250s 2402 on spec paper freq range 2.5-3k-15k i x/o them nowere near that i dont think many do iether as ive seen and read over the years, imho 6k-7k is a sweet spot and safer too as you up the freq range the more power yu can give them cus you are taking out the lower end of the higher end of the frequency (hope that makes sense )same goes for the apt50s again on spec 45w@3.5k and 85w@ 5k and above for example again and yes Tony sounds like comps/horns as he is in the 1.5k range Do you reckon I could get away with saving some pennies and getting the asd1001 but crossing over at 1.5KHz (a whole KHz below rated range) if I made sure I kept the tweeter below 20W? i woundlt do that go for the psd2002 over the asd1001 any day of the week, not worth saving a few pence, and like has been mentiones yu prob end up blowing that asd1001 buy new diaphragm ect then yourll think should of brought the psd2002....ended up the same price in the end..

What do you mean Tony - I always thought it was a fairly broad term for any HF device? online dictionaries all seem a bit vague too; Definition of tweeter in EnglishtweeterPronunciation: /ˈtwiːtə/ noun |

Couple of points;
The lower you want to run a compression driver, the larger the horn you need, it's not just the driver itself which determines the lower limit Very few 1" compression drivers are happy below about 2kHz and usually only the expensive ones. Even fewer actually sound good that low. These are a pretty good deal at £35 (with JAM club membership) http://www.bluearan.co.uk/index.php?id=PAUSD44BF&browsemode=category I would certainly rate them higher than the PSD2002. |

It's a question of terminology. In the Audio business, we all know that a tweeter is a distinct product on it's own and if you read the opening post, a Compression Driver is mentioned. If we were really using the Generic term, I guess we would be calling the VHF Bullitts, and I hope we never refer to the mid as a Squawker, although it might suit some sounds I've heard. |

Kappa 15s sound good for upper bass/ low mid in a horn, for mid up to 2KHz they really are quite nasty.

my comment was related to this topic, ie kappa15A in 2-way cabinet.
For bass~low mid application, it may sound half decent, but its another story...
