First off big thanks to the forum members who've taken the time to answer any questions i've had concerning my slowly progressing project.
Tomorrow (weather depending) i'm going to conduct an open air testing of my two 1850s and two Fender trap cabs. I've used the bins before along side another system that needed a top up on the low end and i was very pleased with the result. However, since then i have read the manual to the Crest Audio CA9 amp that i have. On this primary test i had one bin per channel. According to the manual i was putting out 600 watts per channel at 8ohm. Now if i bridged the amp i would apparently get 2000 watts at 4ohm. Would i be correct in thinking if i coupled up my two bins in series (that would be two Celestion FTR18-4080FDs rated at 8ohm/1000watt RMS) i would create a 4 ohm load and theoeticly have a matched system? I think im correct with my calculations above but my main concern is my drivers. I am only well aware that the 1850 horn was not designed for this driver. As ive regularly stated i've been building on a budget and these Celestion jobies where at the right price, and offered much bang for comparitivly little buck. I'm worried that although they seemed very happy having 600watts chucked through them, will they be able to hack being run at full whack in this horn? Cheers for any help anyone can offer, i'll stick some pics up tomorrow evening of how my system looks thus far. |

Nope you need to connect your two bins in parallel to get a 4ohm load. Series will be 16ohm. (parallel=divide) (series=add)...If your amp can even handle 16ohms, it will be putting out probably around 700-800w if you're lucky into the two bins.
Just go steady on the level and listen carefully fore any sign that the drivers are being pushed to hard when feeding them the full 1K....

Arse sorry! I'm being a dipstick, i mean parallel! My nobness shining through there in all its glory...
I'll obvioulsly be very carefuly turning it up and listen to signs of distortion as you say. Im just worried if anyone knows anything about this specific driver? I've read many a post on here about warning people off certain drivers in certain applications as it physically wouldnt be able to handle it. I was wondering if my Celestion FTR18-4080FDs where any cause for concern. |

The 1850 cab was designed for a driver with a high BL (magnet driving force), like the PD1850, or Void V18-1000. Those drivers also have stiffer, stronger cones, larger voice coils and are generally over engineered, able to handle the pressures and work well in that particular design.
The Celestion Frontlines don't have the optimum parametres for use in the 1850, probably better suited to the 186 with its larger rear chamber. Thats not to say it won't work, just be carefull about pushing them too hard like Jethrocker says, as you may well end up damaging the drivers. |

To do a dull thing with style - now that's an art.

Those Celestions are the driver Davey T's USB is designed around. Seems to be a great driver but as people have said, not for the 1850. Best suited for Reflex/bandpass/BP-Horn etc....
I guess I could simulate them in the 1850 out of interest. I might get round to it! |

if you are happy with how the cabs sound operating with the amp in stereo it might be best to carry on like this, get a few payed gigs done then sell the celestions, combine the cash with that from the gigs and buy some PD1850's.
then switch the amp to bridge and unleash the full potential of your cabinets. Edited by Static Age - 02 March 2007 at 7:19am |

Had a fun 10 mins playing in the garden today before the noise police turned up in the form of a bloke saying he liked the music, but his baby who he was trying to get to sleep had other, less positive views. The best thing was he lived half way down the road so we must have been doing something right.
To be honest i was a little disapointed. The bass wasnt as clear or as punchy as i remmember it, and i think my Mid/tops out power my bass so had to have the amp lowered a bit. So i'm going to build two more 1850s for sure (i know im supposed to anyways) and use the 2nd CA9 to power them. Then purchase another amp for the mid tops as i think the CA9 will fry them if used for long periods. As for running the full 1000watts @ 4ohm through them, i'm shelving that idea as suggested by static. 600 per cabinet should be plenty for the mean time. Heres some pics.... very nice, look very well made.
for a single pair, best to set a 50hz lowpass and give a 3db+ at 63hz, brings them to life a bit. a pair of 12"+1" 350w rms reflexs easily keep up with my 4x186 horns getting 1k rms a driver for dance music ect... just live music which needs the serious midtop grunt! JBL 15"+1" beasts, forgotten model number but they are serious quality even for their age. just thought id throw this in haha! ![]() Edited by gingerbiscuit69 - 20 April 2007 at 5:37am |
