    Posted: 16 June 2007 at 5:58am

The much anticipated, much awaited V18-1200 test results.

These are not laboratory, scientific test results measured under scientific conditions.

They are however, a compilation of observations of different drivers in cabs using the same amp/pa setup with the same songs played through each driver/cab combination.

In essence, a group of approx 8-10 dub loving bass heads, gathered in a speaker builder’s premises in South London, from approx 10.30pm to approx 03:00 am to hear most of the top 18” drivers used in scoops today. Especially the V18-1200.

The amp used should have been higher power, but had enough juice to make “all” the drivers shake the “high” roof, tremble the ground, walls and flap trousers, even twenty feet from the cab. Therefore the amp/pre-amp/eq setup sufficed for the night, and various tracks were selected and played.

It wasn’t really a competition, as the general attitude was, “how does each driver compare to the 1850 ?”. Therefore a track would be played, and the bass output applied to in turn, to the various bass cabs to hear how each driver/cab sounded.

Each person gave their input/suggestions whenever desired in a very open forum way. Drivers were swapped between cabs to identify which driver sounded best in which cab.

Drivers present: PD1850, RMJ Turbomax, Void V18-1200, Void V18-1000A, V18-10000B, Bline 800

Cabs present:ASS RX18, Shortman full scoop, Shortman mini scoops (2x), Tekasis Olde Chipboard.

A Mr Ultimate mini scoop was present but not used.

Round 1:Full line up

Left to right

Shortman full scoop+V18-1200
Best sub definition/warmest sound, sub as deep as 1850

RX18+V18-10000
Very deep and loud, very defined not as much SPL as v18-1200/1850

Shortman mini + 1850
Brutal Sub SPL, not as defined as V18-1200, very very deep

Shortman mini + Turbomax
Sounded very nice all round, but not in league of above due to being not completely sealed and baffle cutout not specific to driver.

Round 2:The best from the above

The group decided, the combinationations required for comparison, where as follows (left to right)

ASS RX18+V18-1000
Same as above

Shortman Mini + 1850
same as above,  Loudest/Most Brutal SPL again, but one note'ish

Shortman Mini + V18-1200,
Lethally defined sub, notes could clearly be heard and felt from 63-31hz
from a single scoop !!!!!!!

Was agreed in this round, the Shortman Mini was the best all round cab present.

Round 3:The Final
Somehow the Bline 800 got straight to this level in the Mini Scoop.

From left to right:

ASS RX18+PD1850
PD1850 absolutely brutal in this cab. Most Sub SPL and improved control.
Sub definition improved slightly. Definetly down to 35hz with 1 scoop

Shortman Mini+Bline 800
Suprisingly good. Sub not quite as deep as PD1850 or V18-1200. Very warm and defined, but not as defined as V18-1200.

Shortman Full scoop+V18-1200
Warmest, Fullest most defined sounding sub, but SPL "just" short of pummeling given by PD1850. Probably just as deep as PD1850 in RX18, but whole group perceived more sub content with PD1850.

Final:

ASS RX18+PD1850
-------------------------
If you want the most brutal, controlled sub, here it is. It drops ridiculously deep, but lacks definition, warmth. The PD1850 will drop deeper in the Shortman cab, but will handle less power all due to RX18 smaller chamber.

Shortman Full scoop + V18-1200
------------------------------------------
The warmest, fullest sub I have heard from a scoop. This combo is pretty much the same as above, but much better sounding with slighty less brutality.

Two matches made in heaven.
------------------------------------------
These two combinations will provide sub downto 35hz with 1 scoop. There I said it.  I heard it, and felt it.

Other observations:
---------------------------
The V18-1200 (large Vas) did not like ASS RX18's small chamber.

PD1850 (approx 250 Vas "med") will tolerate large chamber, but loses control quickly, therefore loved RX18 mid size chamber)

Teks Olde chipboard cab was savage with V18-1000, and would blow away many 1850 loaded lesser scoops.

1x V18-1200 loaded Shortman mini will destroy a house party, and shake "every" room, roof, wall and window.

2x Will Suffice for Sub and throw, in Hall with upto 150 people.

Final words:

Due to driver performance, For some strange reason, it was as if RX18 was designed for PD1850, and the V18-1200 was designed for Shortman Full size scoop.

Rog, is Stone Love scoop similiar design to Shortmans ?

Tony, were RX18 and PD1850  under cover lovers ?

Apologies for long post, opinions all personal, no flaming,

Regards.

Oh! you know I wish i was there!!

Lev! is that you in he blue shirt? and is that gelliz in the cream jacket?

Tony! what is the RX18 chamber size? the DubSub rear chamber volume taken from the base of the back baffle is 67 ltr

I think i would have done his test differantly Lev

played flat, no eq?

Lev! I'm betting that shortmans scoop has the back baffle very far back and is not very long??

this would give the affect that it plays deep

but what it's really doing is kinda fooling you, it is playing low because that is all you can hear, if you know what i mean? I think your hearing only low notes because of the rear baffle situ, its lacking the high bass? in the Rx you will hear both but more high bass, the high bass envelopes the low notes

but if it's shaking the building, same volume same note, I cant argue with that

whats your opinion on this?

thanks a mill geez for putting in all the time
edit: bet shortman cant sleep now how many v 1200's is he ordering?

so out of 10 what do ou give it?

i'm interested to hear & feel what a v18-1200 will do in a superscoop compared a pd1850 as the rear chamber is also quite small in those.

A listen in a HOG sub would be interesting too when someone builds one!

good question smithers! does that mean it wont work in a Hog? the rear chamber is small

smithers i'm sure the super has a bigger chamber than the RX18, Rog? Tony?

edit:  just worked out the size of the rear chamber in the super from the base of the baffle upward's and i make it 58.78 ltr?

No. I took the pictures.. (with my phone ).. don't think Gelliz was there, Blue shirt dude is Tekasis. The lucky b'stard who owns all the scoops and maybe the midtops, amps as well.

It wasn't just a test really, it was more like how will each cab/driver combo perform at a gig, with the music and sub levels demanded. Which drivers will take the punishment and dish it back out, and which drivers will need the brakes applied earlier.

Didn't really examine Shortman cab, but it does have big chamber. So large Vas drivers have room to stretch feet out.

1850 is a bit of a hybrid with 250 Vas, so likes Mid size chambers (RX18) to large chambers (shortman). However Superscooper chamber is smaller than RX18,  so thats really V18-1k territory.

We were only interested in the sub (31-63hz)  to be quite honest. However first comments made about V18-1200 were it can deliver  sub to punchy bass/low kick, much more so than 1850.

Difficult. Test needs to be run again with high power/high damping sub amp (VZ5, Crest 8001, P3000, QSC mx3000a). Can say this because Amps used didn't have enough damping to control 1850/V18-1200 in large scoops.

Basically v18-1200 was just behind 1850 in SPL, but better in everything else.

It is most likely, V18-1200 in shortman large scoop with top notch amp will out perform 1850 in RX18 (The Holy Grail combo!), "WHEN" more than 1K per cab is applied. Less than 1k per channel, and 1850 has it on SPL, but not quality on sub.

Can say that because, V18-1200 easily handles more power in large chamber than 1850.

What I didnt mention was how close it was between the two drivers in The shortman mini. The V18-1200 could take lots more power in the mini than the 1850, but we didnt have it. If we did, we could possibly have crowned a new champion last night.

Also have to fit up Turbomax with it's desired box, As it is very, very fussy about cab and loading as opposed to V18-1200 and 1850. These two performed no problem just with clamps.

Superscooper
==============
As I said before, "I think" the V18-1000A (the standard V18-1000 available to joe public) will be the best driver in superscooper. Don't think V18-1200 would sound good, as it didn't like RX18 cab.

It would beat Bline just on ability to handle more power, but Bline is excellent top class speaker.

I don't think so - It'll be tried again with the baffled cut exactly for it as it was swimming around the hole cut for the v18. Plus this time I'll do what you previously said long time ago Mykey & use T-Nuts for a tighter grip.

Not because it weren't good enough, it sounded very good. Only because the full grill had every screw in why I think no one wanted to unscrew it. Didn't you hear it Levy / Ren ?

It was actually the block-board one not chipboard.

I made sure bringing that one for a few of us to hear, as Tony (A.S.S) mentioned he didn't recommend it as a wood to use. Many couldn't believe it. Oh yeah, it's a scoop looka-like, there's nothing inside like fancy framework, baffles & all that - It's just a box

I left the chipboard one in the garage for Toxic, to witness him throw it on a bonfire. Sure he'll change his mind after hearing it.

I've mentioned before, 3 of these on their sides one on top each other, sounds wicked.

Levy, the amp was 1700w / ch @ 2 ohm (GPS1700) - More than enough power I thought. You heard the old time baby Peavey (CS1000X) which still sounded tough. Strange how you never mention bridging it  Too much excitement eh!

Was agreed in this round, the Shortman Mini was the best all round cab present.

I personally & others agreed too, that we want/need another test, this time with with more of each cab, as the swopping around the drivers was a bit too much, plus my back is in pain at the moment with all the lifting done. (Preferably in the day time)

This test was a just a warm up with the roots reggae, scoop & piezos guys. Next time will be slightly different.

New Mini-Scoop on it's way just for the Turbomax permanently.

What made me laugh is some of the guys fraid to lift up the v18-1200 to fit it it the cabs.

Every driver sounded good in both Shortmans cabs.

Respect due Levy for teaching me & my mates how the Vas is so important (along with other parameters too) but what really opened our eyes to it is the way the v18-1200 sounded in the RX18. That really shocked us.

That's exactly how the JBL drivers that came in the RX18 out of Hammersmith Palais sounded in them.

Don't forget something, Mr A.S.S (Tony) has RX18's outta road now with large chambers. So that cab with these new v18-1200's must be something else.

Tony, hope your invitation to Southend is still open ?

Where's Jethrocker, still waiting upon your return, as the Pre-amp party could be on it's way soon.
