Mate has one of these, and often trips 32A breakers in venues, on switch on.
Heard some people plug amp in switched on, any other suggestions? Heard there is a mod ? |

Not sure bout the mod tbh,
but it may need a 64a breaker? also all Crest 001 pro series are known for tripping breakers on switch on sometimes my do it in the house on a 32a ring mains

Get someone to build you a mains distro which switches the amps on in sequence prob using D-Curve(fuse) breakers either way you need a soft start mechanism Edited by djkeet - 27 January 2018 at 7:14pm |

A friend has one of these, did the same, took it to repair and was told one of the transformers had a fault. Is now sitting in scrap pile. Wondering if not actually faulty, and C/b's not slow enough to handle current in-rush. Might pull it out again and re-check.
Back breaker amp tho!! |

Massive transformers = massive inrush current. Worth getting the soft start circuit checked because the NTC's do wear out.

So do you all agree then if the NTC's are starting to go faulty, this is the problem on switch on?
had orther amps in the past with hi inrush current , pain in the ars sometimes in certain places
Thanks... |

In my example, I'd have thought the repairer would have checked that, but who knows. Does sound like if that component fails then in-rush current becomes too large for mains supply protection. If you see what I mean

It's not a definite but if the NTC's are starting to fail short circuit it's possible.

Yeah, like some of the comments above; 01 series really do demand an absolute buttload of current on startup. Watching what they do to a genny when you try and fire up a rack of them (something like a hillstart up a wall) is amusing to me and probably worrying to those who worry about such things.
I always wanted the 10001. Utter beast of an amp. Probably needs to have a box of extra massively bigulated breakers in a rack drawer under the amp at any given point. Apologies for this totally useless post but I'll say it again. What an absolute monster of an amp. edit: I can see that the viglink thing on the forum picked up on the words "absolute monster" I don't dare click right now. Does it need some sort of privacy mode turned on? Edited by Meat - 27 January 2018 at 10:00pm |

Hi,
The soft start on these amplifiers are pretty weird. It is done on the secondary side of the transformer BEFORE the AC is rectified rather than the usual primary side of the transformer via two relays and two 25 Watt resistors. Check the two soft start relays (RL1 & RL2) & that the contacts have not welded together on either one. You could also check the 25 Watt resistors (each one is in series from the bridge rectifier to the main storage capacitors) are not open circuit (R3 and R4 & should be 10 ohms at 25 Watts). I had one amplifier where one 10 ohms 25 watts resistor was open circuit, and the relay contacts were welded together. Edited by simonp1100 - 27 January 2018 at 10:25pm |
