Pardon my ignorance but i don't really see any advantage to a common BR box.
I think that all that space around the driver is a waisted space and the box can be a lot smaller.

it does have an effect

I agree that in the subbass range you don't have any benefit, but above 60Hz there is a gain caused by the front chamber acting as a bandpass.

this design was never ment to be released as a great build, it was just an experiment I made in a rainy day for an ultra cheap subwoofer project.
