I mentioned in another thread that I'm building some X15s, I'm not sure about the compression driver though.

Whenever I read about 15" reflex mid tops they're always seem to have a 1.4"/1.5"/2" compression driver in them.  I'm assuming this is to allow a lower crossover point thereby giving a more full upper-mid range.  Is this right?

If so, what about putting something like the BM-D740 in the X15 instead of the D450?

Cost is a restriction, otherwise I'd be putting the SN-740Ns in them, but other driver ideas are welcome.

thanks,
Phil

Does anyone else have any thoughts on this?  I'm building them fairly soon and would appreciate the input.

The BMD740 is definitely an upgrade in terms of powerhandling and SPL from the 450. I belive either the BMD or SD series compression drivers are adequate choices.

For a horn I use the PAudio I use the PH3223. It is one of the recommendation and is about the only 2" throat horn from PAudio with a 90* coverage that I would use. (The PH2380 is a bit big).

As the horn is 2" you could also look at the BMD750. You can weigh up the prices as you won't need to by a 1.4" to 2.0" adapter with this route.

Lastly you could use just about any 1.4-2" compression driver from the higher end companies. B&C, Beyma, 18 Sound etc. And I think the great sound 1" B&C de250 and Beyma cp355 have a fair bit of guts to be used with a 15". I suppose use the ph220 flare for them.

Rant over.

I believe the Beyma is actually cp380 and cp385 for the neo version

Seeing as I've only got two 18" reflex subs for the low end though, do I need the extra SPL from the compression driver?

I switched from the BMD450 recently to the DE250 and the difference is very nice :)

Having designed cabs going down both routes, I would really recommend going for a 1.4" or 2" exit compression driver over a 1".  A 15" and 1" will never actually meet together properly.  I built some XM15 style cabs a few years ago with an SN15MB and a DE250 which sounded good but you could notice the limitations of the combination.

I've now moved onto using an 18Sound ND1424BT which is a 2.5" diaphragm 1.4" exit compression driver.  Although I haven't actually moved the crossover point much further down, the larger diaphragm compression driver has much more authority in the upper midrange because it's not struggling to reach down to the 15".

The BM-D740 is a cost effective way of getting a large diaphragm compression driver.  I would recommend a horn flare like the B&C ME90. P-Audio must do something similar.

I've got a SN-740N in the workshop you could have on the cheap.  Only been used for testing the original porn horns, so about 2 hours use...

Was this a straight swap on the same horn? If so, are you using the PH220 as per spec? I seem to remember you said you were using something different actually.

I ask as I run the SN15MB and BMD 450 on the PH220 horn in mine (with VXM passive xover from PAP) and I am slightly disapppointed that there is no 'sparkle' or 'presence' to the top end and I have read good reports about the DE250 so this seems to be a potentially easy upgrade to improve sound quality.

Cheers,
Angus

edit: typos etc
