DIY will try to build their amplifiers without copying another manufacture’s design piece by piece. You can visit www.diyaudio.com, which can help you along the way. However, they will not give you a free schematic of a high-powered amplifier unless the developer chooses to share his or her design to all.

Best Regards,

Here has a 1.5 k design that may benefit from a few mods.

Strange, I thought I replied earlier but must have got distracted at work and not have hit the butto.

I can thoroughly recommend the ESP site (as posted by Joe).  DIYAudio is also a great place.  Lots of people post schematics of amps they're working on. You won't find a complete set of instructions but lots of interesting discussion to give you ideas.

The problem is by the time you've bought the bits, the cost has gone straight past what you could buy a decent new unit for

But you learn a lot more than taking a trip down the shops.  Plus psycoacoustics means that if you've built it yourself, it will sound so much better, especially the first time you fire it up and you're relaxing with a cup of tea.

It's just like building speakers, only makes less mess and takes up less space!

A bit like Beranek's Law, only for amps.

Beranek's Law

It has been remarked that if one selects his own components, builds his own enclosure, and is convinced he has made a wise choice of design, then his own loudspeaker sounds better to him than does anyone else's loudspeaker. In this case, the frequency response of the loudspeaker seems to play only a minor part in forming a person's opinion.

L.L. Beranek, Acoustics (McGraw-Hill, New York, 1954), p.208.

Away on extended leave.

Although probably not powerful enough for most people these days,  a good starter for the first time diy'er would be to build from ready made modules like those available from ILP Electronics:

http://www.ilpelectronics.com/

This company has been going for decades, and I'm amazed they're still going strong.  I used a pair of their 240W modules in a home built amp many years ago and can vouch for their specs - which are actually under-estimated.  It taught me a lot about internal placement and cooling airflow (they need forced air cooling) without having to worry about component level stuff (and that's even though I'd designed and built several valve amps previously).

Absolutely agree with all this, finished a couple of p3A modules from the ESP pages the other day and very happy with them.

Not so sure about less mess though, still finding bits of metal in the bottom of my feet every now and again but thats what you get for having your workdesk in a bedroom.
