Evening all

Considering that the K10 outputs 5kw/channel @ 2r, would it therefore work to connect lab drivers in series internally and run 4 labs (8 drivers) per channel of a K10. This still works out to be 1250w per box which is enough?

Cheers

Jon

yep, will be fine,  called "series-parallel" . .. i am assuming the drivers are normally 4R wired in parallel in the labs to give 2R? and you were considerign wiring them up in series internally to give 8R?  (4 x 8R in parallel would give 2R overall) which woud give you your 1250W a box

you dont need to do that .... just but two 2R boxes in series giving 4R, and then paralell up the two 4R lots of two boxes ... giving 2R again,  job done. depends whats more effort, butchering up some leads or opeing up all the cabs .. either way, elecrically the result is the same

Both the LAB12s in a LAB horn are wired in parallel to give an impedance of around 4 ohms per cab I believe.

in that case ....

they will be 8R drivers,

so wired as 2 in series in each box will give 16R, 4 boxes in a parallel will give  4R again (if doing thebox re-wire thing)

alternatively ...

putting a 4R box in series with a 4R box,  gives 8R ... and then stacking thse two in parallel gives you yor 4R again.

a K10 should deliver about 2500W into 4R,  which split across 4 boxes wont be enough :(

They're actually 6 ohm drivers but the pressure in the box brings them up to around 8 ohm each

Ah ferk... for some reason i was thinking i could get a box to be 8 ohm

Maybe there's a 4 ohm version of the lab12 - that'd be useful. But isn't there some issue with using 4 ohm drivers?

You maybe need to look at two amps that will bridge into 4R.
Couple of new FFAs Jon?
Or maybe some K3s or K6s?

Unfortunately I don't think there is a 4ohm version. Like you say, the load they actually present when inside the labhorn is much closer to 8 ohms per driver. They're really quite an odd box in terms of power/impedance.

How are you getting on with yours spesh, what do you power them with?

I suppose 16 drivers on 1 amp is quite a lot, maybe i was asking for trouble!

I'm running 4 labs per 4050HD.

To be perfectly honest, I was a bit worried that the 4050's wouldn't have enough power for 2 ohm stereo on Lab's, but to my surprise they actually deal with it quite well. They sound much better than the PL4's running the same setup and there's actually a surprising amount of weight behind the sound.

That said, I still think I'd be better off with a pair of 5000VZ/Inf8's. So needless to say that will be an upgrade coming quite shortly. I fancy another pair of Floods aswell, so I think the bank balance is gonna take a bit of a rinsing.
