I'm planning to build two Punishers to complement some existing PA cabs
I've got. Having had a look through the plans, building them shouldn't be
a problem.

However when it comes to crossovers whats the best way forward?

I want to be able to still use my existing cabs as full range units for
smaller indoor jobs, and use the punishers on larger jobs or outdoor
ones. How would you do it?

Also where do you guys put handles on your punishers! >.< and would I
be foolish to only have 2 castors and try and go for a parcel truck way of
movement!?

Any recommendations for amplifiers to drive them with? I'm just about to
buy some more amps anyway for the other cabinets, was thinking QSC
PLX range, to replace the 20 year old Studiomaster brute driving them at
the moment!

Thanks in advance! Laurence

Infinate 8's do look very nice, But I'm sadly not going to be able to afford
them after I've built the subs! :(

I was thinking £450 tops for an amp....

I assume I could run the amp in bridged mono mode, with the two subs
connected together creating a 4 ohm load?

What do people think of....

QSC MX1500A
http://www.allprosound.com/catalog/pdf/specpdf/QSC/mx/
MX1500a.pdf

Crown PT 3.1
http://www.crownaudio.com/pdf/amps/133377.pdf

Or anything else for that matter!

I assume I will have to get an active crossover to compensate for the delay
between the drivers, and the horn.

I wish I could afford a more powerful MX :(

Moneys tight with building the two punishers....

The specs of the Crown are...

525 8ohm per Channel
1530 8ohm briged Mono

I'm a little confused about the differences of Bridged Parrell and Bridged
Mono? After spending aages googling I'm still unsure! >.< any hints!

I figure if I connect the two Punishers in parrell, and run the amp bridged?

Laurence

p.s Thank you!!!

Okay maybe I've found a little more money ;)

I'm going to look at the PLX's a bit more carefully, I've used them before
on a few goods and they seem pretty good. Might have a C-Audio
RA2000 as well by the end of next week.

I figure I'll go with the el-cheapo Berhringer crossover initially, and
upgrade latter this year to somthing decent like the BSS.

4 Castors on each unit.

Top of the end PLX to drive them, running bridged mono with the
speakers connected in Paralel.

Ordering the wood tommorow (russian birch 15mm @ £29 a sheet)

Would you rebate the joints? The plans don't have any rebates only
mitre's.

Ta for the advice so far. LG

Hello,

The plans are drawn in such a way that even relative unexperienced woodworkers can build a Punisher. If you can do better joints please do, the stronger te cabinet the better. Also make sure there are no airleaks.

QSC PLX seems very good value for the money. But I did not hear these amps on Punishers so cannot commend on how well this works.

Best regards,

Walt

The MX line is nothing but the current HD series .. take that into consideration... also a dual monoraul supply is better on Subs..

the plx is good..but id go with a torrodial amp.. like say a Crest or something different for those low notes..  no *lag or feel as the amp cant supply that punch*

I'll have a scout about, £500-£550 is really my upper limit!

Its really gotta be suitable to drive the studio monitors as well, and leave
some money for the crossover.

I'll see if I can do any more elaborate joints, my wood supplier only does
ply in 1525mm x 1525mm sheets, so you get 1 punisher from 2 sheets,
but there's not much spare.

I had thought of maybe drilling&screw as well as glue the side sections,
but on reflextion I'm not sure how well the ply will take it, being screwed
into side on.

I'll have a think about the joints while I'm waiting for the wood to arrive!

Cheers for the advice...

Laurence

( Oh, one last thing is there any sonic difference in which orrientation the
cabinet is used? I.e upright or on its side? I've just measured up the relfex
RCF cab's I'm planning to stack on top, and it looks like I'm going to have
to lay the punishers on there sides. )

Need to be relativly good qaulity, as when I buy a few more/somthing better
it will replace the Hafler Ta1600 in the studio.

Those TBone amps are very cheap tho! Wonder what they are really like.

Right picked up a QSC PLX3002, which is capable of kicking out 3,000rms
bridged, so its just about enough for those punishers. The plan is to pick
up another one, once we get some money in.

Just ordered all the cable, sockets, etc I'm gonna need, scary how much it
racks up to, £150 of my hard earned cash disappeared! :(

I've been busy this week, so I've gotta finish marking the plans out, and
send off the paint colour sample to be mix.

Then its all systems go, I've got a professional carpenter on-board now. If
all goes well, and once we've built a few mone. We are thinking about
maybe building some units to sell, if anyone is interested?

I'm quite interested in the Xtro as well... What else would make a suitable
top? I'm going to run my RCF units on top for the time being.

We are also planning to build 2 lab horns. Will be interesting to see how
they compare, and combine.

Laurence
