Probably going to be hardware, possibly the display adapter. Could well be getting too hot inside. Check your internal temps using one of the many free programs out there and hoover all the fan intakes out as much as possible. Could also be a dead or not spinning fan causing it all to get too hot. Might have to open it up and check it all out.

I may be wrong but I had a laptop that did exactly what you are saying, a friend said get a new power supply, I reluctantly did and it never happened again.

Almost certainly heat then, seen the same graphical effect on desktop PCs when the CPU cooler was badly mounted. It'd die just like that with odd graphical artifacts when under load.

Pop it open, check the fans aren't seized or dead, and give it a good clean out!

What make is it ? If its a "major" manufacturer like HP/Compaq or Dell (and possibly Lenovo) - get the hardware maintenance manual - it'll tell you how to disassemble properly.

If there's no official take-apart guide, look on youtube - quite a few there - some good, some not so ....

Then you can check the fan and airflow situation. If there's significant dust/fluff/general gunk in there - carefully clean it out. Its also often worthwhile to renew the heatsink paste, as over time that wil dry out and become less efficient at thermal transfer from CPU to heatsink.

Also - worth noting - if there are air intakes on the bottom panel - make sure they're not blocked when using the machine (can happen if you use it on a soft surface like sofa, bed etc.)

REMEMBER....POLITICIANS AND DIAPERS SHOULD BE CHANGED OFTEN AND FOR THE SAME REASON

Artifacts like that on screen are nearly always ram. Ram on the graphics if it is separate, internal if shared. Yours appears heat related, some old DV HP's did this as a design fault.1st Gen i5/i7 notorious for heat, is it old?  Blow it out by using your mouth over side vent blowing backwards (with it off). If tons of fluff you need to dismantle and there will be ack stuck over the fins between fan and exit. Check RAM seated in properly.
If it's all clean is the fan running a lot? If so you have to find the process that is causing this?
What O/S is it on, 7/8/10?
Bad charger: Never seen this but there is always a first.
Constant overheating to the point in question will mess up the board chipset and CPU in the end.

It's everything, not everythink!

I've been trying to install Linux to it though and now for some reason it boots with the safe mode progress bar which takes a bit longer but at least it goes to the log in screen whereas before I had to boot it several times to get past the boot sequence. Some programs crash the laptop after they've loaded for a while.

I ordered the OS X install disc (10.6.3) from Apple and I'm using 10.6.8 currently because that's the most stable version for most audio programs I'm using. Traktor runs fine on it though so at least I can play gigs.

EDIT : Macbooks used to be "hackable".. the first one I owned was and I stuffed 4gb ram into it straight away. It served me well until I broke it but I got it working after that.

Sounds like heat/RAM issues. Rebuilt a PC once that would blue screen at random points after during OS install. Turned out I'd pushed one of the drives a little too far and it was slightly bending a RAM stick. Combination of heat/poor electronic contact did the rest.
