Technics SL1200/1210mk2 and others with the same motor should be oiled during routine maintenance as they use oilite (sintered bronze) bearings which dry out. If used dry they will eventually wear, causing the rocking platter symptom you sometimes find.

Any motor that uses a ball race won't require any oil there.

yes brushless motors.

So dont the SL1210 mark 2 have the brushless motor?

The higher end DJ turntables now being built all seem to have brushless motors.

doesn't matter whether the motor has brushes or not. It's the bearing-type that's important regarding lubrication.
Motors with brushes are rare in pro turntables, though quite common in midi-hifi style belt drive decks

Correct. 35 Years ago when i was in the hifi trade,we used to sell the hi-end Technics SL models brand new, sl1400, sl1410, etc. Included in the box was allways a tiny bottle of oil to lubricate the centre bearing, one or two drops per year at the bottom of the shaft.
Be seeing you.

How does one go about finding out the bearing type of a 16-pole, 3-phase, brushless motor ? This is the motor mainly being used on the higher end Dj decks especially the hanpins.

The big clue is the phrase 'direct drive' -

This means that the platter is being driven directly - not with a belt or an idler wheel.
So the platter is part of the motor and there is only the one bearing.
