Looking at getting an external soundcard for starting to do rew measurements.
Looking at the focusrite scarlett. Will the 2i2 do everything i need it to our is there an advantage to getting a 2i4? Or recommend something different? |

For what you are doing you don't want "nice sounding preamps" you want flat response so don't waste your money on anything more than an M-audio Fast Track or similar.
P.S. I had a sound card at one time but then I needed a small PA mixer so I bought one with USB and now use that for measurements. Edited by Conanski - 21 January 2018 at 7:30pm |

Multiple inputs would be handy if you are measuring multiple components at the same time. However, if your software cannot manage more than two inputs for real-time measurements, it would serve no purpose to have an audio interface with multiple inputs. From experience, M Audio works well for measuring purposes.

Do you want to make loopback measurements of electronics ormicrophone measurements of cabs. If the latter you will need a soundcard with phantom power for most measurement mics.
I like the ART USB Dual Pre but there are many out there with similar features/price. If you just want electronic low level measurements (no mic) then any cheap USB external will do. |

The focusrite sapphire range is a good start, but yeah I'd spring for the 2i4 over the 2i2 simply because it has a pad on it. While not initially useful for doing smple measurements of cabs, if you then start to do live measurements at gigs or events a loud system/band/DJ can quickly overload the mic and needed padded down.

Balanced outputs are a nice feature to look for.

I use a Focousrite Saffire 6 with REW with no issues.
It has 48v phatom and 16-18db pads on inputs (can't remember exact pad level). Could probably pick one of them up second hand really cheap. |

Not great but probably do the job cheaply at £23 at the moment |
