Yup - well thats usually what happens when the grey-suits, accountants, and marketroids take over.
They really don't know or care what they're selling - they'll try and run the business the same way if the're selling paper clips, clothes pegs, or hair-care products. |

I stopped buying electronic components from Maplins years ago.
My next greatest need, would be Computer Hardware, e.g. hard disks, memory, graphics cards, network cards, networking gear. I'd prefer to wait till a Sunday, and go to Stratford Computer Fair, where there would be at least 10-15x different market vendors, selling the same thing, competing with each other. In the last 12 months, every time I went to Maplins for something, it was either out of stock, or needed to be ordered, or was ridiculously over priced.. So, some of us, just not surprised at this. |

Yeah - I used to quite like going to the Stratford fair - me + m8s were regulars (15-20 years ago). We were quite pally with the 3 brothers that ran it ..... even ran a one-off stall there couple of times. I thought it was dead and gone .... but went there just before Xmas - and it was quite sad actually - less punters than traders :-/ Nothing "interesting" there - no office clearance/off-mainstream/bits-boxes to rummage gear at all. Going _slightly_ back on topic :-) .... best thing at the fair was couple guys playing some decent old-skool reggae music there :-) And - that fair was the most extreme example I've ever encountered of spec bullsh*t wrt audio gear ..... pair of the most vile, cheapest, nastiest "PC speakers" in a box with 800W written on the box in a huge typeface with flames around it etc. .... powered by a 9V 800mA wall-wart I'll _always_ remember that |
And that 'kind of' sums up why Maplin are going down the pan. When I first visited the Maplin store in Bristol in the 80's (at it's original site half way up Gloucester Road) the staff all knew what you were talking about and would even discuss your circuit and offer their input. A couple of them had previously worked at Target Electronics shop in Stokes Croft where that attitude was commonplace. I remember going in there once the first 'sell-out' had happened and the staff were different, my question of, "Have you got any 741's in stock?", was met with a look of bewilderment. He had no idea what a 741 was. That was when I switched to CPC. Since then I only used them when I had no other choice. Recently I was looking for some baluns for a CCTV over Ethernet system, Maplin wanted £12.99 each! I got exactly the same from Amazon (well, ten of them actually), along with ten male and ten female power connectors for the same price. To me the 'people upstairs' in Maplin thought that people would just buy from them because they were Maplin, just playing on the name from the past much the same as Citronic now, if you see what I mean. If that was the case they only have their naivety and stupidity to blame. Yes it is a shame, but all good thing come to an end. To me though, the end was twenty ago.
That's the Maplin store i worked in on a Saturday in the early 90's (manager was Keith) and was always rammed on a Saturday. There would always be guys coming in with large list of components & discuss there latest project and would ask for advice etc. I used to take most of there stock of 2SJ50, 2SJ56, 2SK135 & 2SK176 for my latest power amplifiers and got the nick name "MOSFET MAN". Target electronics was where i would go before Maplin opened a store in Bristol, help yourself to the components on racks, then take it to the counter and pay. The building now has just been knocked down (in the last week). Remember RA Pits in Picton street (Mostly big PA stuff) & the shop "Marshalls" which was a small electronics shop on the corner near the lower end of Gloucester Road. Maplin stores in recent years held less and less stock and every time i went in to get a chip or voltage regulator would either be out of stock, need to order it or only have 1 in if you needed 2 . Went to buy an item last week listed at £11.99 On the website, got to the shop and it was £14.99 after a bit of a row and showing them the website I bought 2 at £11.99 each, was in a different town this morn so popped in to see if they had any, yes 2 but now £17.99 so when I said I bought 2 last week for £11.99 I was called a liar by the assistant, so I showed them the receipt, he said we are not giving them to you at that price, I dropped them on the floor and told the guy a story about his mum, I had sympathy when they announced administration, not now, price hiking scam.

I was going to pop into the Stevenage one with my youngest yesterday (we were over that way anyway) and..... they have already cleared out the unit, nothing to suggest they were ever there.
I did think I was in the wrong place originally!

I wonder if the Harlow one has gone yet?
I hear that even their closing down sale prices are still significantly higher than everywhere else! |

And higher than when administration was announced even though the signs say up to 50% off, I thought price jacking when claiming it's a sale was a serious offence? Edited by concept-10 - 19 March 2018 at 7:16am |

No intention, just shows the administrators are just as bad as the management team that took them down. |
