Hello! Just want to say Im happy to find your forum, I am very impressed with the work that people do here We are a small group of enthusiasts, we specialise mostly in techno production and DJ ing. To make a long story short, we had an old Community sound system with blown/replaced drivers and also the boxes were starting to fall apart, so I rebuilt/ redesigned them. Whats left of community is 8x12" drivers for tops. The system is now - 2x18sound 18lw1400; 2x18" china drivers and the rebuilt Community tops. Eighteens are all ported boxes. What I want to do now, is I want to build Tapped horn or front firing bass horns for the 18sound 18lw1400. Community tops have 132db continous spl each so I would like the 18" horn to match that and play down to say 35 hz flat or so. Tops are 60cm wide, so the horns should also be 60cm wide. Sometime soon, I would like to also build some kickbass horns, for Eminence Omega 15 pro. I will stack those over the bass horns. Please share some ideas for bass horns, there are probably some plans somewhere. This is one topic I found would be a candidate for this occasion https://forum.speakerplans.com/th18-build_topic98040.html Thanks in advance! August

You will not get 132dB continuous flat to 35Hz from a single tapped horn.
The Xoc th18 is a good option, (the 'flat to 35hz' claim is -3dB and driver specific) but if you need to match your tops you're looking at two a side. One will still make a fair bit more noise than what you've got, although if you're currently running all 4 eighteens on the same freq band it might not be louder.

You need to realize that tapped horns (or any other horn) are much more stressful environment for the drivers cone.
I dont think 18LW1400 is man enough for horn loading. Not that it wont work, but you should be very careful with the power applied to it.

Thanks for the answers.
The driver has BL 24 isn't that enought for a TH? Does anyone have a Hornresp parameters pic for the xoc TH18? I would like to simulate it, Im not good at Hornresp. |

18sound does specify horn loading in the product description so it's not that it won't work but there are better options.
You don't want to waste time building a pair of average tapped horns when you really need four strong ones to meet your requirements. 2 very strong ones or 4 okay ones will do in a pinch. Switching your two drivers to tapped horns won't give you the boost in SPL you're after. Google image search for hornresp input screens. Most well known designs are on the first page of results.

We had perhaps over 200 of those reconed over the last decade of so. So trust me, they wont take the beating.
They barely manage with 1KW in a reflex box.

Do they really have carbon fiber ribs? On catalogue photo cone doesnt look too solid.

18LW1400 is a reflex driver. A very nice sounding reflex driver. There are some in local installs that have been going a very long time with a lot of abuse. Main issue seems to be that the suspension starts to fail and develops an offset from centre. Probably not the right driver for a high cone loading.
There are no carbon fibre ribs, I believe it's just a small amount of carbon fibre mixed into the pulp for the cone.

With
4 x 12" going down to about 100 Hz and 2 x 18" per side taking the low
end, you'll not be needing a kick cabinet, if the tops start at 150 -
200 Hz then sure. I think the 18LW1400 will
survive the XoC1 TH18 with around a 700 - 1000 W a piece (and a steep 30
Hz high pass) easily. Come to think about it, I think they'll survive
about anything regularly available with that kind of power. Tuning to
about 30 Hz (flat to 35 Hz) sounds good, they'll need to make a bit of
excursion to stay cool. I'll swear on the
18LW1400's life in Cubo Sub (up to 80 Hz) but if asked, I will vouch for the TH18 as
well. That being said I would use the TH18's plans with the lowest
compression ratio (no cone correction), that you can find. |

I think I might build two TH18 for start, and use the drivers with care, then upgrade to B&C drivers.
I dont know the xmax for community 12" drivers but i think its no more than 4mm, which would be not enough for 100hz. China noname drivers come from omnitronic horns, They were rated 400w rms but I drive them 350w rms in reflex boxes. I do not want to push them because again no knowledge on xmax + they have a very large bump around 50 hz that makes the driver move a lot. 18 sounds are being fed 760 watts. Thats what I simulated in Win isd
