18" BPH Turbo style cabs

 So, since moving away from HD215's a few years ago and going to 18" reflex cabs I've enjoyed having that bottom octave that was completely missing with the HD's but I've missed that punchy 'in your face' sound that the HD's had so I decided to knock up some Turbosound TSE 118 style cabs to go on top of the reflex cabs. 

 Apologies in advance for the quality of some of the photos and lack of detailed photos, I just took the odd photo as I was building. 

 First job, lots of cutting with my diy saw guide; 

 
All panels cut; 



Carcasses assembled and battens added for the access panel;



 Then I fitted the baffles and guides for the curved piece;





 After that I made some cutouts for the speakons; 





 To form the curved piece I fitted a load of battens around the guide/former pieces, then bent a sheet of 6mm ply over the top; 







 Then I fitted the top panels, braces and sound reflector piece; 



 Cutting out the braces; 



 
 Fitting inserts for the access panels and access panel test fitting; 





 I also knocked up some flared mids whilst I was at it Smile; 



 Front battens added and edges rounded over; 



I did some testing after that, oh, and knocked up some horn boxes (I've stuck a new dust cap on that mid too!)



Filling and sanding (I HATE filling and sanding!); 



 First coat of paint on; 



 And the finished cabs; 







 With the mid and top cabs; 





 The comps are BMS 4550's and by christ they're good! I've never heard a 1" comp capable of going so loud whilst sounding so crisp and clear. 



 I used the cabs in anger for the first time last night and was very happy with the results, I've got the punch back! Big smile

That is some nice wood work over there. Bet it sounds good! Maybe you can make the HF cabinet have the same width as the other boxes? Would look lovely :) 
We need more SPL!

What drivers have you put in the 118s and how low and high are you runnign them?

I assume you've used the 118 plan from hornplans.free.fr?

Good job.

If you can spend the time trying diff 18" drivers with diff voice coil sizes and cone weight, LMS eq/xover settings, on the 118s, you would be amazed at the freq resp you can obtain!!!

Did this when I had THL818s, results defied accepted rules for 18".

 Thanks, I deliberately made the top box just as big as it needs to be as I don't have a lot of storage space and am also space limited when transporting the cabs. Oh, and yes, they do sound good!. Smile

 At the moment the 118's are loaded with Peavey 1801 Black Widows (don't laugh!) as I had a pair sat on the shelf doing nothing, they seem to work surprisingly well! I've got reflex 18's doing 35-100, the 118's running 60-180, the mids 180-1.2k and the tops 1.2k and out. I had to have a play with the delays and phase due to the overlap on the bass cabs but I've always found this seems to give a much fuller, rounder sound than running the two types of bass cabs in separate frequency bands. My initial thoughts were to run the 118's up to 150 as the HD's I've used previously used to get really honky above this but these 118's seem to sound a lot cleaner at higher frequencies so I've run them higher to take some pressure off the mids.

 This is the plan I used but with a few small alterations; 





I can't even remember where I got it from, I've had it stored on my laptop for ages.

 Thanks, yes, they're basically a narrowed Altec M17 which I realise is an ancient design but I've built some before and had good results so stuck with what I knew. They're loaded with Fane Studio 12L's and sound lush....

......and bloody loud! LOL

 Thanks, different drivers are definitely on the cards at some point, as said, they're loaded with Peavey 1801's at the moment and whilst they sound surprisingly good in these cabs I have a feeling they're not going to last very long.

  Thanks, I got the idea to do the curved piece this way after seeing an ASS BS1200 being cut down into two separate cabs, this was how the curved pieces seemed to be done in that cab. Smile   

 Edit; I took some inspiration for the big central brace from that cab too.
