For some, the cost of the best Lightweight sub amps, make then unfeasible.

So let's keep this discussion heavy, about what people think are the best transformer amps available, for:

  • Approx 2-2.5kwpc @ 4 ohm stereo,
  • 40hz - 100hz
  • Single amps, not couple bridged.
Don't want to hear about Proline 3000, great amp, but it is not in this league.

Only amps I have personally used, that I consider to deserve to be in above list are,

  • Void Infinite 8 MK 1,2
  • Crest 9001,
  • Crown MA5000VZ

EDIT : Crest 10001, is ludicrously heavy, and not really for mobile PA.. LOL

CA18 is one of the best sounding amps ever, but like QSC 5050, just not same grunt as above.

Maybe someone has used one of the 50kg Soundstandards, or can confirm there is an SAE, that can draw up to 25A, when getting down and dirty!!..

Ca 18 does give more than it's specs so it gets my vote.

I've used CA18 on 32A spur, and it really does sound sublime, down to 40hz.

However, I've powered systems with Void Inf8MK2 and Crown MA5000VZ for long periods, and can confirm they both easily surpasses it, in terms of SPL, before clipping, on decent supply.

Crown MA5000 gets my vote, the only problem being finding good ones, as they are 20+ years old now,and many were abused,or serviced by numpties,or canabolised to keep others going. Buy a bad one and it will be a money-pit to put right.
Be seeing you.

At the last sound clash Vivek played a track that had a strong sub 30 rumble running through it, I stood with Jon listening to his RC1 system reproduce it, yes his system is very good but it is powered by CA18s, we both agreed it was the closest we have been to an earthquake, not knocking other amp, just love CA18s Smile

Money pits? I am just buying some old heavy weight money pits at the moment, insanity is allways a bonus in this game.

Would really like to hear from SAE owners.

Especially 3U versions.

Also anyone with the expertise to squeeze more performance at 4 ohm stereo, out of Crest 9001.

Also heard rumours, of upgraded Void Inf8 MK1S,  being rock sold at 4 ohms.

To my knowledge there’s only one of the big 3U amps in the UK. It’s a Soundstandard MA4800, I brought it in in 2015 - it currently resides in Manchester with Hi Grade.
Used it at NHC 2015 and 2017, absolutely brutal.

Years ago, JTS told me, he could no longer get the output devices, he used to put in these.
