Also anyone with the expertise to squeeze more performance at 4 ohm stereo, out of Crest 9001.

I had a play with a 9001 once.  I swapped the transformer primary to the violet 230v instead of the black 240v tap, which gave a little more voltage swing, and I slowed the clip limiter slightly so the amp could slightly soft clip and it certainly sounded meaner.  I decided my boxes didn’t need the extra and the CA18 was still my best solution (not to mention having nearly fifty CA18 already), so I swapped it back, but was a fun experiment.

As a general rule transformer amps cope better with high duty cycle sub than lightweights, but the problem with most of the transformer amps is they were designed at a time when drivers required less power, so they just weren’t designed with the voltage swing.  The modern lightweight amps of course now have the voltage to match the more modern high power drivers, it’s just they don’t have the guts to sustain the current!

We built our own amps in the end for our active subs through necessity really.  They swing up to 200V peak giving up to about 2,500w RMS into an 8 ohm driver, but delivering that with the same conviction and effortless weighty sound as a 9001.  I couldn’t find a plate amp anywhere that could do that.

I was wondering about boxing some of them separately for anyone after a heavyweight amp to drive high power drivers, but I fear the lightweight revolution has taken over.  Although I cannot understand the logic behind someone sacrificing audio performance to save 20kg on an amp when they are using that amp to power 400kg of bins....

I'm sure there would be a niche customer base for your boxed up amp. I'm sure it's not just light weight that push the heavyweight to new technology. Old iron is aging, components difficult to source as mentioned. But if a modern equivalent was on offer, .......

Spanked our ua6, never got warm. Had more confidence in that than the vz5 I own. Worst I did to the crown was run x4 tops drivers per channel in parallel. Amp got hot as did speaker cable. Only time the red lights went out!

Clap

I have to admit, the Powersoft XX series in my opinion, are the closest thing to lightweights delivering the transformer sound and power. And I guess, if you are doing 2x gigs every week, weight reduction matters everywhere, especially if renting full systems out.

Regarding your comment about modern drivers, agree fully.

Modern drivers are being rated at 1000W-1500W rms, and those drivers that are really that strong, are just not being powered fully, 2x  per side of MA5000VZ, Crest 9001, even 8MK2.

Hence this thread.

Not one of the big boys, and not in the power brackets of the thread but I've got love for the PV2000. Used to load it 2r a channel and it never complained. Very heavy amp tho

Used both the sae pxm1450 and inf 8 on sub, both did the job very well but the inf 8 came out on top. Also found the sae clipped slightly earlier than the inf 8 powering 2 PD1851s a side.

Ram audio BUX5.0 - i've directly compared these with crest 9001 and they do the business. Reliability in the face of poor mains used to be an issue however.

Never believe speaker sensitivity, always hogwash.

Believe Reference efficiency, (this will now start a fight with distributors trying to sell zillion watt drivers, with extremely low Ref Efficiency).

Except when certain large British Manufacturer, attempts to provide inaccurate ref efficiency figure, and you calculate correct figure, yourself.

Reference efficiency for PD1850 "was approx" 2.8, approx 3.1 for V18-1000.

Guess what, they are extremely sensitive, and make big noise with just 800W input.

Compare that with drivers with Reference Efficiency of < 2.0, and you could put 1200W into them, not much happens.

Shortly waiting for the brigade that says Ref Efficiency means nothing in sub range, and will just remember the Scoop shootout, where Shortman mini with V18-1000, measured louder than any other Scoop.

LOL
