Hello,
I have a Yamaha 512 mixer amp, which is rated at 8 ohms. I am using it to run two Celestion SR3’s, also rated at 8 ohms. I link the speakers together. I was thinking about getting some Celestion SR1’s, but I see these are 4 ohm. Would these work? Regards Kevin

What us the exact model number for the mixer? Some of these are rated for 4ohm loads so you could safely run a pair of 8ohm speakers daisy chained together but not a pair of 4 ohm boxes unless the unit has 2 separate amp outputs... which isn't the same as 2 speaker connectors.

From the specs I can find, the mixer has 2 onboard amps that will drop to 4 ohms, so you should be ok with the Celestion SR1 speakers. Edited by Earplug - 13 May 2019 at 9:46am |

Yes, that would be the idea! That way you get best use of the available power, etc. |

Being a layman as far as ohms go, why are there so many different ohm settings on different equipment? Surely it would make more sense, and company’s would sell more products, if everything worked with everything.

Everything does work with everything, it is just a question of for how long. Even x Ohms is a strong simplication, when you look at an enclosure resistance as a function of frequency. It is just a guideline.

Actual "Ohm Settings" is more a leftover from valve amps, which had/have transformers on the output and need to be matched for different speaker ohmage. Simplifying a bit, modern amps are limited by the amount of current they can provide (and heat dissipation), so are designated with a minimum ohmage they can (safely) drive as the lower the impedence, the higher the current that will flow for any given voltage. |

Just to muddy things further, both SR1 and SR3 had a dedicated pre-amp crossover box, which offered some overpower protection and some form of "voiceing" correction, Optionally with outputs to amplifier of SR6 or other Celestion Bins of era.
But if you bought Company A's speakers, and Company B's amplifiers, Company A would miss out on selling you the amplifiers, so Company A insist you have to buy their amplfiers to work with their speakers... |
