On subs what do you guys think between a QSC RMX4050HD running one sub per channel vs bridging a Peavey CS1000x on each sub? I have two RMX4050HD running four double 18" subs and was wondeirng whether finding four CS1000x and bridging them would sound better, the only problem I worry about is the Peavey amps are old, would having all four serviced be a good idea? Or is it best to stick with the RMX4050HD amps?

The Peavey CS 1000X is a more robust amplifier in which, it will play 4 ohms Bridged Mono continuous without any signs of shutting down. The only pitfall would be that the CS 1000X will pull as much current when needed in which, will be greater than the QSC RMX 4050 HD.

Bear in mind the Peavey CS 1000X is a Class AB amplifier whereas the QSC 4050 HD is class H. So, from an efficiency (least amount of current drawn) standpoint, a single QSC 4050 HD in 4 ohms stereo has an edge over two Peavey CS 1000X operating at 4 ohms Bridged Mono.

Best Regards,

I like those old PV CS series, built like a tank, and you have to do something pretty stupid to break one, but they are getting on for 30 years old now. No problems with getting them serviced, is a straightforward design. MJ 15024/25 output devices (although Peavey put their own numbers on them).
Be seeing you.

I'd love to be able to hear them side by side, one RMX4050HD vs two bridged CS1000x I know where there's two of them so I might try and take those two for now and then find another two soon as I can. I was thinking about Peavey CS800x bridged on each of my mid/highs also but i'm not sure whether there'd be any benefit between two bridged and an RMX4050HD in stereo on them for midhighs. Someone did tell me the RMX4050HD would be better on mid/highs as it's newer and had better sound quality.

I've used both the CS1000x and PV2000 at 4r bridge on bass and both of them were pretty brutal, you could hammer them into the DDT limiting (VERY good limiting too!) all night and they wouldn't miss a beat (as said above). That said though, amp technology has come a long way over the last few years, lightweight amps have become hugely powerful and relatively cheap, is it really worth lugging about big old 3u monsters these days?

I don't mind the weight all I want is the performance, I know lightweight amps are great nowadays but from what I hear you have to spend a lot on a lightweight amp that can give you the pure power for subs as the older amps can. I'd love lightweight amps but i'm aware of the fact Powersoft amps at about a minimum of £1,000 used would be what i'd need to spend and that kind of money is money i'll never in my wildest dreams have. It took me a long time to save up for my sound system and the two RMX4050HD amps I have.

I don't mind weight because at the end of the day speaker cabs will never be light so a little more weight isn't a bad thing if it gives you that properly gutsy bass. Also as far as I nknow most lightweight amps on a budget cannot sustain that amount of power so i've heard many are rated wrong where the poweroutput they can actually give is more like burst power or power for only a few seconds or minutes at most. So whereas the old CS1000x can output 1,500 watts continuous average power bridged into 4 ohms all night long the newer amps can't so you need an amp that can output WAY more and then use RMS limiters to protect the system. That's what I hear a lot.

Fair enough Smile, if weight/size isn't an issue and you have access to a pair of CS's then I'd get hold of them and have a listen (you'll be impressed if my experience of a bridged CS is anything to go by!). As said, they are built like brick outhouses, have excellent in built limiting and being class AB should sound nice, you'll have lots of redundancy running an amp per cab too.

I'm in the middle of moving to a new flat at the moment but as soon as I get settled i'm gonna pick up the two CS1000X amps if they're still for sale. If you could guess would you say the CS1000X one bridged per sub would sound better than the RMX4050HD? The RMX4050HD seems to give nice sub bass on my subs it's creamy smooth but not impactful or gutsy so to speak.

Jay, i recently collected a very old CS1200,(35 years old), weighs like an elephant, but nicely made inside, 32x  MJ15000 series output transistors, sounds lovely, so much punch to it....if you ever get the chance, get one, you wont regret it when you hear it.

Be seeing you.
