You could use LineX or something I suppose but then that would add a kilo or two!

My colleague greeef is about to make a 3d printed hollow-wall Hifi/monitor enclosure, and fill the walls with "acoustic concrete" to a recipe of his own devising...It involves shredded car tyres...Now that's going to be a surprisingly heavy little bugger, and should sound excellent, or so we hope :)

I've always wanted to try Poplar plywood, but never been able to get hold of any. In theory, lighter than birch but nearly as hard and tough.

Poplar is a lot softer than birch, but its very flat and stiff, has good torsional strength but it does not take the impacts as well as birch.  Ive done some cabinets in poplar, the good grade void free poplar costs a bit more than birch, but with a polyurea coating its pretty durable and its a good balance of compromise for lighter cabs IMO.  For big heavy tour grade cabs where you tend to wheel them rather
than carry them i think birch / polyurea is the better option, as weight is less of a factor and big cabs tend to take bigger knocks.

Birch for the outer panels and poplar for all the internal panels and braces would be the best overall though.

You get a lot of cheap ply that is poplar core, like the red faced poplar where you get a thin hardwood laminates on the outside, its not as stiff as proper high grade poplar though, tends to have less laminates and voids and un even layering.

Its worth getting the good stuff its nicer to work with too.

Oh, now you mention it I did once build a set of X1's out of the red-faced "marine" ply - the customer supplied it - actually probably the worst wood I have ever used!
Tons of voids in it, with "stuff" in them - like feathers, bark, threads, the sweepings off the shop floor apparently! And glued up with some horrible compound that smelled like hot manure when cut. Very difficult to get a screw to hold in the edge.
I didn't know it was poplar, I really thought that would be a better grade. But it was total bobbar.

Check the Danley Matterhorn for the peak of silliness. Also the Carreta SomCar things from Brazil.

Perspex is asking for trouble, it cracks super easily. Go polycarbonate if you can afford it!

It was a fun answer to a fun question. I wouldn't actually consider Perspex, having worked with it in the past.
But fun threads turn into, well, unfun threads all to often on here. Which seems to be why most of the interesting contributers seem to have dried up....
