Are those actually Tannoy gold's, or the later HPD?

Im not on Facebook but a sneaky look tells me that these are wildcat era drivers, not monitor golds im afraid. HPD’s would normally have re-enforcing “segments” of cardboard glued to the rear of the cone, these were missing from all the wildcat drivers i ever saw.
Nice drivers, but nothing like the value of monitor golds, a re-cones are probably beyond the value of a working driver, particularly as any hifi buffs that are interested would want a pair with the same age cone/coil.

These are monitor golds, same era as wildcat. Tannoy Gold and/or monitor gold is a range of drivers spanning 40 years or so.
Hans Hilberink's site is the place to go regarding everything about tannoys history and specs.

They aren't what most people would refer to as "Monitor Golds", i.e. the classic Tannoy drivers dating from before the 1980's. Too modern...
I used to have a pair of HPD385's in big cabinets. Exceptionally efficient and with a very coherent "point source" sound, but I always thought the top end was a bit ragged. Which of course it was - there are always compromises to be made in product design. The development of soft domes has driven coaxials out of the pro monitoring market since those days, but the classics are still very sought after by vintage hi-fi aficiaonados. And of course there are some amazingly good wedge monitors using coaxial drive units, although not made by Tannoy. Edited by madboffin - 03 October 2020 at 8:59pm |

Tannoy seemed to paint most of their later drivers that gold colour,i have even seen a pair of their late PA 'gold' bass drivers advertised as 'Monitor golds' by chancers who come across something at boot sale, do a quick price search for Tannoy Golds, and then think have won the lottery.
