I inherited these from a local venue. It seems they were stored in the car park and they just wanted them out the way so I went down and picked them up.

Although they are massive they look like a decent build quality and I was hoping someone might have an idea what they are? One came ported (although there were no actual ports just the holes) the other didn't as it looked like the panel wasn't original. I would be interested in knowing the original porting arrangement.

The plan is to give them a bit of love in the way of a bit of filler and a coat of paint.

They are loaded with a mix of drivers as follows:

2 x RCF L15P-200/AK - whilst they work they look like they have done a few gigs
1 x Celestion F1540
1 x JBL 330757

The drivers being mismatched is not the best and I'm wondering what the best route to take with them is.

Ideally I'd wait for a pair of RCFs to come up second hand and have them all matching but I might not even keep them long enough though.

I may opt for some Thomann specials.

Does anyone have any recommendations on anything else? Or any info in general?

Here are some pics;

Look like Court bins to me - or copies thereof.

And yes, there was originally 2 ports in that front panel. Original drivers were 2x JBL E140.

Any idea of a decent substitute driver?

PD 1550 would be ideal, but four of those will be pricey....you would end up with a pair of free w-bins owing you £800.

Alternatively, why not just look for a second pair of used RCF's L15 /200's to match the two you already have?
Be seeing you.

I would also look for some RCF L15P200's.
From memory : ports should be 10 cm in diameter and 20 cm long.
I have seen lots of pictures of cabs with just the two holes and in a sense they are ports, but tuned waaay too high.
Good response from around 65Hz with the correct ports, though you can shift a tiny bit around with portlength, depending on the used speakers. Without ports it's rather 75-isch.

That seems a good solution. I'll keep an eye out. It's not like i'll be getting them out on a gig any time soon.

Thanks for the tip Peter, I'll look at reinstating them.

I tried many different drivers in Court back box mk2 and the best was RCF L15 554K. And you won't need massively powerful amps to get very high output from them in those cabs.

Looks like you have the mk2 Court black box cabs there. The mk1 had a slanted front, different port arrangement and couldn't use the single nylon grille that came with the mk2's.

After a closer look at the pics, I'm not sure they are real Court bins. I don't remember the bracing going around the front edge and the way the port panel attaches to the cab looks different. The flare rate looks different too. Most of the copies were out the back door cabs, so not really copies at all. They were the real thing, just not sold by Court. Looks like you have a copy, and one that was built not by measuring up a real one.

Did the original ones have the ports over the centre of the back of the drivers?

I had a pair like those above, I also had 4 PAudio es600's. So I tried them, they sounded fine.

I reckon that those are earlier versions (Based on handle positions). Not sure if original box or copy.

Shown in early Court brochure:

In a later Court brochure (the Court logo changed), the handles were in different places, and could also get a version with flying points. Couldn't find any photos with the grills removed:

Over here in the Netherlands Stage accompany is the usual suspect when it comes to these bins. https://www.stageaccompany.com/support/vintage/SA4515-4518.pdf

They were to be found everywhere but ended up in the freetekno/ravescene the last 10 years so travelled a lot. If not court SA would be my second guess. Just like when it comes to jbl4520/30s over here.
