Inspired bij Bass*n*mass his idea of less banter and more building I picked four monacor 6.5" midrange drivers up as an extension of my no-budget rig which currently has a jbl 5430 cross to an 1" horn at 1200 Hz,funky and it works but runs out of steam.
so. enter these drivers which i got for nearly nothing. https://www.monacor.com/products/components/speaker-technology/pa-midrange-speakers-/sp-6-150pa/ Monacor is not known as a powerhouse with great drivers but this might just be one of those gems hidden in their catalogue. w should work well between 200 and 1300 Hz in a pair wired to 4 ohm but what to do with them.... quick 'n dirty in a closed cabinet or building a decent horn and if so.. where to find plans for these? idea isn't hifi or earsplitting levels but a nice extra touch for all those vocals which are now a bit in anger coming from a 15"   Edited by Bams - 03 February 2021 at 3:57pm |

those should work fine in a 5l closed box.. f3 would be about 150ish hz.. go for it :)

Well thats the quick option.. allready decided that in that case the cones will become the same blueish green of the horns ;) would fit great under the horn but a nice horn ala mt122 would also look tje bees knees.

something like an adjusted smt212 would be easy to do and doesnt require much science.. you`ll gain some directivity and sens., which you might need to eq out though you could paint the horns in your desired colour sheme without the need to paint the cones :)

Had a quick look at the specs, the Monacors are only 93db/w/m, so you mighty have to give them a bit of welly to keep up with the 4530's and the 1" horn.
PS, liking the bullet horns (2402's?) screwed on the sides. I'm trying do the same,need to find a single one to make a pair with a spare one here. |

The complete rig is one big aftertought ;) the bullets -indeed alnico 2402's- came on my way for the price of a crate of beer so i couldn't let them go. simple passive crossover and some rough timeallignment with the horn driver which also looks quit nice.
Due to all the different sensitivities the gain structure for the rig will be quite exotic :) but as it is used for smaller (garden) parties and in beergardens and such it will be more than sufficient. now.. lets find a decent amp to make it three way active ... never finished, but to date the rig only costed 300 euro's and trying to keep it below 450 for the sports sake, the eight core speaker cable will be the most challenging.

well, decided to really go for the quick n dirty route but when using some calculators they all scream EBP is around 130 so most suited for horns but this term seems to be more like a rule of thumb to decide if a motor is strong enough for hornloading.
can anybody learn me something about this term?

in your case it basically just means a shallower rolloff in the lowend.. (as with all low qts/high BL drivers compared to "softer" ones within same app) they should work well in compact closed cabs for your app :)

EBP is driver Fs/Qes For horn loaded mid this needs to be as high as possible. If you multiply EBP by 2 you get the frequency (260Hz in this case) where the output will start to roll off at 6dB per octave, the mass related corner frequency. Horns have better pattern control at higher frequencies, you will find that this can balance out the driver roll off to some extent. If you want a quick easy horn just try around 80 degrees between side walls, something like 20 degrees between top and bottom, make the throat square and slightly smaller than the driver's cone, make the mouth around 4 times the area of the throat, and see how it sounds. |

well.. inbetween homeschooling and zoom meetings the rain subsided yesterday so a good moment for some relaxation and a mockup without glue and so on! seems to cooperate well with the horn on top!
