Just wondering if everyone is aware of next year's introduction of the red diesel ban.
The ban excludes generators 'used by showmen or fairground operators' but does not mention concerts or outside venues hmrc Edited by kedwardsleisure - 13 May 2021 at 9:18pm |

yup, its been looming for many many years. Even users like rail, maritime & agricultural will have to claim back the 'duty' from the white they use. Going to be a administrative ballache. Festival seasons in '19/'20 were very hot on pushing down power draw, pushing heavy sustainability policies. This is why, the big promoters know! Hopefully more event venues will install heavy mains distro from the grid where possible, and help facilitate these changes. Certainly many city center event spaces are finally installing meaty 3phase distro boxes. Also, on a side cheeky note, fuel duty will now also apply to bio as well as fossil, making sure the chipfat type bio crowd are also paying their share to the greater good.

ohhhh those stats.
Predicting to add £1.405 billion of duty collected in 2022. Ouch. |

does this make natural-gas powered generators the cheaper option?
ammonia/ether mix might work as a substitute for natural gas in boilers and possibly generators but I haven't seen any commercial product using that yet - just discussion of ammonia gas turbines for power stations.

HMRC are keen to stress that it's about lowering emissions rather than raising taxes.

next summer = every client asking if we can run off solar/battery banks. Good time to diversify and invest i guess. Just got to be cheaper than the fuel bill of the diesel alternatives = lots of work!

Had a great load balancing battery bank system at Pride last year (no, the one before!) mainly due to not enough peak power in the venue. The idea is a 20' container of batteries that kicks in when peaks are detected. It means you don't have to spec your generator to provide for everything on full plus some extra where the engine is running at less than peak efficiency for most of the time. I hope they do one for smaller sizes meaning instead of speccing a 40kva for a small stage I can put in a 20-25kva.....

This is all news to me ( I am never involved in generator work professionally )
and interesting. Is 'showman' a legally defined definition? Presumably it is, as there are references to 'showmans vehicles ' with regard to taxation etc. Is a DJ a showman? If not, why not?

Im guessing a showman is defined as being a member of the showman’s guild. They already have certain legal rights and exemptions covering the right to pitch up in certain locations / times or drive unusual, old or very heavy vehicles where us mere mortals can not.
