Hi everyone,

I am a total newcomer on the topic, no knowledge, no skill, only a desire to build a sound system that grew over the last years accompanied with months of reading, mostly on this website, in the hope of finalising the project...

The project is to build a more or less portable (hence 12V powered) system, that would be mostly used to play dub, for very little audience outdoor, indoor, well a party enhancer but with a hope for a dub soundsystem gut feeling. Everything should fit in a budget around 500~700€, so globally quite low, but again it is a small project, for the joy of making, and potentially sharing dancy bass between friends.

Initially I envisoned it small and simple, 2-way 12'' scoop + tweets, but after reading in several places on this forum that this could be disappointing (or a "waste of money" I think it was..), and also reading topics such as: http://forum.speakerplans.com/how-to-build-a--system-for-reggae-dub_topic36988_page1.htm - https://forum.speakerplans.com/how-to-build-a-sound-system-for-reggae-dub_topic36988_page1.html or http://forum.speakerplans.com/mini-reggae-dub-system_topic104905_page1. - https://forum.speakerplans.com/mini-reggae-dub-soundsystem_topic104905_page1.html, it seems that 15'' is a must, and also that I should opt for a reflex bin or tapped horn rather than the classic bass scoop?

So far, along with the help of http://https://abassodyssey.com/-system/ - this build, the design look like:

- active cross over: 4x4 miniDSP
- amplifier (one for all?): Pioneer GM-D8704, 1200W 4 channels (or maybe D9701, at 2400W to eventually have more power if I double the mids and highs?), sub in mono bridged, mid and tweets in parallel if I pair them
- Sub cabinet: Mini-scoop 15, THAM15, cubo15 or Reflex 15 ?!
- sub driver: I'd love to get a hand on a Eminence Gamma 15A, no luck for now, otherwise Kappa 15LFA? Fane Colossus speakers are out of budget...
- mid: not decided, 2(1?) x 8''? Which bin?
- Highs: 2 (1?) x1'' compression drivers, such as eighteensound HD1050

My main question being about the sub cabinet: is the 15'' scoop an idea to be thrown away (and yes I want to play roots dub, but indeed also modern dub..)?
Secondary question, which, it seems, depends entirelty on the answer to the first, is about the sub driver... I struggle to settle on a definitive option.

Otherwise as you can see this is a very early layout, I am all ears for advice, critcs and comments.

Thanks everyone for keeping this forum full of useful information and passionate sounded debates, a pleasure to read.

Cheers

Great thanks so much, indeed thast seems as a nice alternative, but it only builds with two 15'' speaker, that would require another 100 or 200€ and seem like it will weight much more no? I'll see...

Any thoughts on the choice of amplifier(s)?

This 'bootybass' was built as two singles, look at tham15 and tham12 too, well regarded but I have no experience.

Oh I see now indeed, thanks for pointing it out. Could be a good start then indeed.

You've seen this presumably?

I have seen it some times ago and I lost track of it! Indeed, the whole built is very similar to what I am going for, first with a single subwoofer. I guess I will tend towards this build, and maybe swap the THAM15 for the Bootybass then?
And see if I can use the GM9704 for a few extra watts...
