I'm sure you guys already know I am "Digitally challenged" so talk to me like I'm a 5 year old............. then again most 5 year olds probably understand computers better than me!!!

Last friday when I first logged on the AVAST box came up and wanted to do a scan. I went with it. Immediately following that I was unable to sign into my Ebay account. Basically I haven't had a mobile number since 2016 but my old one was still on their records. When the verification box came up I used to click on e-mail so a code would be sent, which I filled in and all was well. However, the email option didn't come up so I filled in my password, and clicked on "Need help signing in". This achieved an e-mal option but despite receiving said e-mail code and the problem persisted. I filled in the code, but  the reply said that I had signed in successfully.......... "Click to continue shopping" when I did that it took me back through the sign in proceedure. This went on indefinately.

After 4 days spending 2-3 hours per day on the "Chat" service, I ended up closing my account.

This morning exactly the same thing happened.......... First box was Avast, but despite closing it immediately I then found that google was asking me to sign in. That has never happened before. It seemed they wanted to verify I was over 18........... same problem with the lack of mobile phone.

Now here's the thing, I usually use Avast secure browser, so I decided to try Internet Explorer and using that I got to google no problem.

I've uninstalled Avast premium cleanup, but should I also get rid of the browser?

Also what browser is recommended these days?

I'm an Ex Software Engineer, now Cyber Security Consultant.

On my Windows 10/11 boxes, I use Microsoft Edge browser, and Kaspersky Internet Protection (paid for).

No problems, no drama.

The End.

Suggest you learn how to use Windows 10, and forget all about Windows 7.

Windows 7 will bring heap of issues, main one being lack of security updates.

Interesting that our company binned off Kaspersky as being Russian therefore a possible security risk.

I know of some large companies relying on Microsoft for their security- As Microsoft do unsurprisingly!

I found Avast to be a PITA - At least the free version, and definitely don't rate their browser. It may stop other companies tracking you, but has bad press on the amount of your browsing behaviour that it tracks and sends to Avast.

For work I use a Windows VM under Linux.

Personally, I browse on Linux with Firefox  and serious extensions.

Kaspersky is hated by US/UK Gov, as they were refused back doors.

It’s not 1996, so Windows Defender/macOS XProtect (built-in so long as you keep the OS updated, that includes the major version when end-of-life periods are reached) + Malwarebytes (paid or regular scans using the free version ) + a VPN tunnel to a data centre with hardware firewall is all you’ll ever need as an individual user or household.
