Was going more for the last paragraph from the OP. I’ve got a Leatherman Skeletool, probably used it 4 times in 3 years! Didn’t need a wood saw, compass, water filtration plant or grappling hook so just got the stripped down one ;)

I still have my 'original' leatherman after 30 yrs. Maglite, end wrapped in insulation tape is long gone.

I've never got why some techs carry half the world and the kitchen sink around the waist- its pointless...
All i would recommend is decent gloves and steelies. |

The best thing about having one of them about is.... "Could I borrow your (x) for a mo?" Saves you from carrying loads of tools!
