Hello all! I'm currently pitching a custom build for a client opening a small venue that caters for both electronic and acoustic events and quite versatile in their programming. I'm currently r&d'ing what boxes would be best to approach them with, however it's quite a challenging space - It's not the largest footprint and the room is slightly tapered with 5 meter high ceilings, and the capacity is around 120 ppl. For this reason I thought that reflex boxes may be a bit washy in a cavernous space but also horns could be a little problematic creating a load of reflections / deadspots. A mate of mine did say to look into some paraflex boxes though. But yeah the idea is to have a couple of subs, and maybe a kick/top or separate. I'm fairly new to this side of audio so any help / suggestions to what designs might be suitable would be great. I'm a joiner so putting the boxes together won't be an issue at all  I've attached a pic of the space and a vague floor plan with the event space circled if that's any use. Reflex (direct radiating) designs are the swiss army knife of speaker systems, appropriately sized and processed they will support one genre as well as the next.
Horns have thier advantages and can also be a universal tool but are harder to integrate with the room and with each other. That ties in nicely with the next point, what does the room look like.. hard surfaces everywhere or are there some absorptive materials in place? What speaker locations are available? Is there space to put larger horn loaded speakers without taking away seats/capacity or obstructing views. Horns look cool and can bring a certain vibe but the primary goal is good sound and more compact designs can deliver that too.

does the whole space need to be covered or is there a dance floor area somewhere in the middle ?

please don't build any more paraflex speakers
from the venue point of view - if it's a new venture they should just hire or buy some second hand equipment and experiment with that for a while until they decide where they want the speakers and how loud it needs to be. And work out if the business is actually sustainable before they spend money on a custom built system. |

It's a small room, looks like about 15m x 4 / 6m, bit with the 5m high ceiling. Side walls and floor/ceiling are not parallel, which may be helpful. It looks like a good candidate for a system designed for high quality and plenty of headroom, if done properly Various things need to be considered first, as they affect the choice of speakers and where to put them. Your first requirement will be some acoustic treatment, starting with hanging some (suitably fireproof) drapes in the roof area. Plus some treatment on the rear wall and probably the sides too. Speakers need to be a couple of metres above head height and angled downwards to cover the audience rather than the walls. Will the room always be be used end stage, or are the mics likely to be used anywhere (corporate events etc)? Also from the drawing there appears to be only one entrance / exit - I'm sure you will need to add another before you can use it as a venue. As above, horn loaded bass / subs may not be a good choice in this space. Edited by madboffin - 28 March 2025 at 2:33pm |
