Getting closer and closer to building my proper system now, my Dad's bought a table saw and router. We already have a jigsaw, orbital & belt sanders and clamps etc. So should be okay to build some boxes.
Trying to convince him to use ply but he reckons MDF will do we'll see about that! Anyway I was looking around in his old recording studio which is now used as a shed/workshop. Just to see if there was anything in there useful to the build... and what did I find? On the floor in my room... Close up of Bass driver - the cone is made out of a translucent material. Some sort of plastic me thinks... This gave me an idea - will tell you later in post... Back panel. Specs read - 8Ohms impedance. 200w Power handling. 89 dB SPL with 2.83v at inputs. ±2db from 50hz~20khz... Pic in situ in my room... A pair of very tatty and well used Rogers LS6 speakers. Apparently the BBC use Rogers speakers as their reference monitors, well I don't know but anyway, they sound really good. They are a reflex design, moderate size cabs 510x280x280mm (HWD). I'm using a NAD 3130 HiFi amp to power them, I've tested them with loads of different music and they really do sound good - for the size of them the Bass output is mental - they sound crazy with a bit of dnb, really really smooth hf extension and the smoothest midrange I've ever heard in my life. They make my posh Altec-Lansing gaming speakers sound like sh*te - and I always thought they sounded great for computer speakers! The inside is lined with a sh*tload of yellow foam and the cabs are completely airtight - drivers sealed with gaskets I'm told. I couldn't get the bass driver out - even after taking the screws out! So if anyone thinks they might be worth something nows the time to speak up as I have their future sorted... Im going to sand the cabs back to raw wood, roundover all the edges, probably do away with the sh*tty fabric grills and paint them with a mental paint job. I want them to be laquered up to the max so I may have them professionally sprayed. I also noticed whilst taking this photo... Thats through the bass port btw.. That when my phones flash went off for the pic the cone of the bass driver lit up like a christmas tree! So I want to mount some sort of multicolor sound activated flashing light unit within the cabs, so that the driver flashes in time with the music! Anyway I've just waffled a lot and I'd really like some input from you guys as your so helpful... Thanks, Joe. Edited by SmokeyJoe - 03 January 2008 at 7:30pm |

Some of those Rogers speakers fetch quite a bit of money. Before you sand it down, have a look on ebay to see if it's worth anything. May be able to sell it and buy some drivers or ply.
Only a thought.

Wow a pair of badges going for £36!! Thats pretty insane!
The ones I have are from the late 80s I think. They weren't intended for pro use - I'm pretty sure they're Hi-Fi speakers... The serial numbers are great though - 6619A & 6619B - A handed pair! Since you guys think I should leave them alone I think I will, they are really nice speakers and even if I don't sell them it would be nice to keep them original I spose... Problem is they look really tatty, all the edges are wearing back to the wood and they stink of damp any ideas on how to get them looking better without destroying them so to speak? Funnily enough, my Dad also has a pair of LS4a's at his place - but they're his Hi-Fi speakers so no chance of me nicking those too. I think there a slightly later model, using what appears to be similar bass driver but the cabinet is a sealed design. The HF is also a titanium dome tweeter which sounds a tad different to whatever mine have. He used to use the LS4a's as reference monitors in the Recording studio whereas the LS6's were always used at home... There is a pair of the LS4a's on eBay HERE currently at 1p lol - will keep an eye on them and see what happens... Thanks for your input people, its always appreciated! - Joe. |
