Saturday's job was just for a DJ event playing a wide range of genres. The guys who hired me (it's a fairly regular booking) said it was my best system yet so happy with that.
Last night I was doing something slightly different in the form of a Pink Floyd tribute in a medium sized theatre only this time using my 2x12+1.4" mid-tops on two of the ported horns each side. I also managed to do a very brief measurement, mainly to check the phase alignment. The ported horns integrated with the 2x12's very well and did a very good job of keeping up with them (the 2x12's are ridiculously loud). When you're used to running 18" reflex, it's a very different sound. For starters the horns don't really do a huge amount below about 50Hz but that's just a feature of the design. I had designed them wanting a really good kick drum but what I'm really pleased about is how good things like bass guitar sound through them. |

Setup with my new 3-way mid-tops built last year on only their third outing. Sounded really good, loads of headroom for the venue.

I wasn't designing completely from scratch because I had a good idea of what I was aiming for. I used Hornresp to model it as I got fairly good agreement between simulation and reality when I built the last ones. I imagine they are pretty similar to the originals. Probably improvements in things like bracing and general construction.
Drivers are not ideal, they're RCF MB15H401 which are predominantly intended for use in mid-tops but I had 4 used drivers available, they simulated really well and are a very efficient driver. The closely related LF15G401 would be better and that's what I'll probably use if I turn these into confetti! |

So given that you didnt have plans did you basically have to design from scratch again?
How close to the original do you think they are, or have you managed an improvement? What drivers are you using? |

Time to drag up an old thread. I had such fond memories of my old ported horn design that I finally ended up building another set!
Yes, there are two slightly different designs. The bottom two were built by hand as prototypes then the top two were built from CNC cut parts once I was happy with the design and drawn them up. First usage in anger is tomorrow, we'll see how they go! |

Sorry I am relatively new to all this, what do you mean by the cut-off? And how would I tune the port?
Is there anything else you can tell me that would help when building these? Such as where you placed wadding (if any) and placing of the throat? Cheers
