Like the description says I cant get these where I am so I am not sure of that they are or what they do. I have looked around and cant really find any info on what it is, or why they are so great. I have read about how much louder they are then normal speakers. And it seems that I read that they are a compression driven or something. Can anyone find or explain what makes them so much better? Or maybe I am confused with something else.

thanks

nathan

if you can make sense of the plots on the porn horn v2 downloads thread (a sticky in this forum) then they should speak for themselves.

as for your comment "what makes them so much better?", better than what?

What I am asking is are they standard speakers, or are the compression driven or something like that??

it's a horn loaded and phase plugged 12" cone and a 1.4" compression driver... what does "compression driven" mean? not trying to sound arsey, sounds like you may have misconceptions that could be cleared up.

Compression driven / compression loaded normally refers to throat compression in a horn as far as i know.  I think its a term that used to be used more but now its more common to say "horn loaded"

Nathan, the porn horn is a fiberglass horn flare that you bolt on to your speaker, in simple terms it is a horn, it makes the speaker louder, more directional, and lowers distortion.

I understand all that, I must have go 2 thing mixed up. I was under the impression that they were a new design of speaker, more like the way a tweeter works. I didnt know that it was a normal speaker with a disperseing center

A 'tweeter' is a generic term for anything that handles a defined set of HF frequencies.

Is it 'compression driver' that you are getting mixed up with? An easy way to think about this is that these are just diaphragms on motors. The compression driver is effectively a driver with part of your completed horn strapped on to it. The porn horn is the horn, phase plug, but no driver.

You need to know your basic horn theory to get around this, if you are thinking that the 'porn horn' is a fancy new type of speaker, you're mistaken. The clue is in 'horn'. A 'horn', in essence, is a device that impedance matches the driver to the air from throat to mouth. Which results in the 'high efficiency' that you mentioned.
Away on extended leave.

On a similar note, shipping porn horns from UK - New Zealand proving to be a massive hurdle.
Having researched a few more threads recently, and with Rog's comment that the MT122 provides the worst Money/construction challenge to performance ratio from his 4-way shootout, and these issues with MT122's comb filtering problems, I'm definately wanting Porn horns for my rig build.

Trouble is, I could make the 12" and HF flares with phase plugs quite easily as I am familiar with building moulds/plugs for the composite boatbuilding industry...
Only I don't have any plans/reference information for any of the fibreglass components as I fear these are a closely guarded design held by Rog/Proaudioparts???

Can anyone tell me if plans/even licenced ones on the flare/horn dimensions so I can build my own could become available I'd be most appreciative.
Regards
James
