Quote using a pair of National LM3886 chip amps

These are the ones that are fitted to almost every chinese powered PA speaker to grace our fair isle. The legs of the chips suffer metal fatigue and then go DC, frying the drivers Whoever They May Be.

Carlsbro's cheapo powered wedges use them too unfortunately - the 8" + piezo jobbies where the amp is in one, and the other is passive and simply daisy-chains on the output. Worked on a couple with failed chips...probably the result of driving a 4 ohm load at full whack for hours on end.

Here are some internal pics of an old TSR-150x amp. As far as I know Bass retail used to use a lot of these for background music systems and jukeboxes. I'm not sure who the OEM for these was but the internals are pretty neatly laid out. Not exactly a powerhouse but still thought the pics were worth a look:

Bass Had their own engineers who designed and fitted such. One was a good friend of mine. Sadly he is not on here. otherwise the 'real' story would be told. He is now a director of Julianas Leisure Services

I'll post some pro audio stuff soon, honest...

Here's a little 15wpc Yamaha receiver, circa 1979 or so. 2 output devices per channel, separate transformer windings for pre and power stages and an Alps pot. The PCB tracks are silkscreened and labelled on top of the board, which is a nice touch for techs. Sounds very, very nice as long as you don't hook up inefficient speakers and crank it to 11. Quality Jap gear! It's currently doing bedroom duty at my mother's, hooked to a pair of efficient Fostex FE-103 fullrange transmission lines and a cheapo powered bandpass sub.

I thought it was going to be a proper Hi-Fi amp with Transistors and everything, for some unknown reason to me decided to lift the lid and found two of the smallest output chips I ever saw, my jaw fell through the floor, They sneakily used a heavy case to give the feel of a proper heavy Hi-Fi amp, but there's nothing in the box, kind of like buying a bag of Walkers Crisps, the weight states '28 g' open the bag and there's 1/8th of a potato in the bag
