That, dear sir ... is capacitor poop.

I would hazard a guess that the lack of support on the caps allowed that one to work loose from its solder joint, got hot and fried, releasing the dielectric fluid.

Decent amps make sure their capacitors are securely fixed .. best is to arrange them to be about the same height as the case and to use a bit of foam on the lid,  or a non-setting rubber based adhesive like evo-stick  or a tape binding around a block of them them.  Breakaway caps ae a common failure point on cheaper amps, just shows a general lack of attention to detail.

They are actually glued down and normally difficult to remove!

This is the result of the stock fault of the bridge rectifier sparking. The capacitor does not like it up it.

As I have three of these, is there preventative action?
Thanks

i've seen a few amps where they glue them together in a hex shape and some where there's foam in between them (like underlay foam), dunno much about amps tho.

Crown XTi4000.  For accessibility / serviceability probably one of the worst amps I have had to work on....

Closeup of heatsinks showing output transistors hidden within heatsink halves pressed together - surface mount components can also be seen underneath the heatsink...

Closeup of the switching tracking supply section.  The drive circuitry for the switching mosfets on the two heatsinks is between and below the heatsinks directly in front of the fan - completely inaccessible for fault finding...

Here's an interesting one - a Chinese copy of a Labgruppen FP10000Q !!  This one had an output module replaced (top right in first photo, with different mounting for the switching mosfets / diodes) due to it failing on first switch on from the box .....

Output module :

An older one this time - Carver PT-1250, also known as a PM 2.0t

The underside of the power supply module - lots of fun to replace the TO3 switching transistors when they fail ........

The XTi are truly a design worthy of Harman's reputation

200wpc at 8 ohms...supposedly. Four output devices per channel, small heatsinks, 13,200uF of filter capacitance and a transformer not much bigger than the bagel I had for lunch.

Good God ! ..thats a design mess :o ..bloody bizarre one at that.

you could quite easily up the transformer, and with better layout make it a 6 channel amp. (assuming you keep the same output power)
