Call me pessimistic but whenever you see a union jack and 'Designed in Britain' that usually means 'Made in China'. The lady doth protest too much!

i like the bit about 'High 80w Dynamic Power allows thunderous bass peaks without loss of control'
I think Richer Sound still sell them £80 - £100 £50

"Strong and effortless with a wide range of equipment" said What Hi-Fi? Sound and Vision magazine of the original Cambridge Audio A1, in its day the U.K.'s number one selling amp. Now we are delighted to offer its successor at a stunningly low price.

As ever, the A1's spec defies belief at this price. Construction is solid with even the front panel being fashioned from thick metal. Speaker terminals will accept thick cable and, like the rest of the amp, are built to last.

The generous spec also includes tone controls, 4 inputs and a recording loop.

Times change, but the Cambridge A1 remains the definitive budget amp!

You have to assume that any british company of any credibility who still manufacturers in the UK will either let the quality speak for itself, or actually say it's Manufactured in the UK with the excuse that you're understandably proud of it. Saying it's 'designed' in the UK is almost an admission of guilt that your once-famously-british brand has been 'profit-maximised' by the management (to phrase it in bollocks) and that you're aiming to mislead buyers into thinking it's still made here.

I can smell this sort of thing like a leaky capacitor.

Some can be very good...and be part of very expensive amplifiers:

The $2750 Gaincard, using a pair of National LM3886 chip amps. People have been making their own versions for a far more sensible price tag...I've heard some with efficient speakers and they do sound rather nice.

I might post internal pics of my 55lb monster Pioneer receiver tomorrow...the complete opposite of that CA! I'm currently using a CA A300 as a preamp in my hifi, it's a good little piece of kit but it's hardly gutsy.

Indeed, some of the chips arent half bad ..but still, packaging it like some 'sophisticated' hifi amp is a little cheeky LOL
