1550 is a great driver, also the 154, not sure how they would be in the HD15 though but the way you put your systems together I suppose it won't matter |

158 is honky imo. id go with 1550 due to it only being slightly more money. lower fs but lower mms if i remember rightly. the 1550 may have a big ol xmax, but it is smooth higher than most 15's with that sort of xmax. it weired because the 188 is less honky than the 158 in my opinion. in using the 158 i think its reduntant when the 1550 is so close to the price with better lf/ lower fs/ lowe mms / better resale value.

if the 1550 plots are so good and the driver can take/give that lil bit more then why is the pd154 the recomended driver?

Price. The difference in sound between the 154 and 1550 is so small that its not worth all the extra money. I havnt actually heard one but 2nd hand info says the 1550 is unimpressive in this cabinet considering what it can do in other boxes. |

Hello,
i've just made this test last week with the PD 1550 and PD 158 drivers i have, and the PD 154 and HD15 that some friends have. We put the HD's loaded with PD 1550 and PD 158 next to one loaded with pd154, and fed them with the same signal amplified by the same amp: a loop taken from the begining of a track i made myself with the hardest kick i ever produced, band limited from 80hz to 250. We noticed that : - 1550 sounded nicer than 154, meaning more defined / musical in the high end, and more brutal alltogether somehow; - 154 sounded undefined and dull in the high end. Not to be used above 180 hz with that driver i'd say... - 158 sounds slighly less good than 154, but so little difference that it can be considered as equivalent. All three drivers were just about as loud, so difference was only in the quality of sound. Considered that 158 cost less and takes more power, i'd say it's a good alternative to 154, while i will keep on using the four PD1550 i have since i intend to cross them as high as 250 hz with my F1 R2SH |
