Wicked turntable, classic idler wheel driven design which is better than direct drive or belt driven but extremely difficult to design and produce. Swiss engineering akin to their watches!!!!
Nice mixer too!!!!Big smile

nitz the goldring lenco is a good deck and its like the very old white garrard
in that its got speed control by moving the leaver slightly but its a bit of a feed back
merchant like the standard technics no centring spring
but you cant beat direct drive the first i see was the garrard dd75 but no springs
and the speed control runs off the mains and is just unreliable not like a technics off a crystal
records are cut on a extremely heavy deck that's direct drive

Actually it is belt drive turntables that have become the standard for HQ.

Idler wheel turntables were incredibly easy to make and most of the 60s/70s turntables were of his kind. Mass produced types i.e. Garrard SP25  BSR MP60 etc even proved that they could be made cheaply with acceptable performance.

The only difficult part was to make them of really high quality i.e the Garrard 301/401 and they are even revered to this day. Once belt drive came along, Thorens TD150 etc their days were numbered.

Direct drive jobbies were often used for Pro use due to their very quick start-up times but they never really caught on with the flat earth society.

LOL

There were a few high-end direct drive turntables that are still sort-after by the trainspotters, there was a particually nice Denon one,and of course the Technics SP10 in its hideously expensive technics factory plinth (last one i saw on ebay went for around £700,and it was scratched-up with a broken lid!).

^ Buy me this please Santa.

When I started DJing it was with a pair of SP25 mk II but soon moved on to 401's + SME's  we used to do some really posh Doo's for Knobs birthdays etc. even had a Candelabra between the decks.

Amps were Leak and Radford valve jobbies and speakers home made with at first Wharfedale Super RS12DD + Super 3's and later Goodmans Axiom series, Imagine what the Japs would pay for it all now.

Ian the real flat earthers reckoned that the speed feedback circuit in the direct drive turntable always made the sound inferior due to the speed constantly hunting, got to admit I could never hear it.

Sounds like a state of the art set up for the time and your right the Japanese audiophiles would give you the proverbial arm & leg. The 401/301 sme combo is a winner and they still sound excellent compared with todays decks. Done a dance in Southall community once and had the 301 hooked up along side some technics sl's and whilst playing dub reggae on one deck the couple of second gap between tunes was silent. The sl's had a bit more noise between tracks and the garrard had deeper bass . The heavy chassis, platter and oak plinth helped.
The other thing, whilst watching Good morning vietnam in the radio station studio you can see two 401/sme 3009 decks in action!!!! Big smile  Im also a big fan of Radford amps.

For all you flat earthers, here is some turntable porn:
http://www.rewindmuseum.com/vintageturntable.htm
I myself started my hifi life with a GL75 (later used a couple in an unsuccessful DJ console), progressed on to a Technics SL1700 (consumer version of the 1200) then to a Thorens TD160 with SME arm (including oil damping - where do you buy that stuff nowadays?). To be honest, the Thorens/SME combination sounds really good, but I would give it up for a new SL1200 or even better an SP10 shown earlier in the thread simply for practicality. The Thorens is constantly in need of repair (all parts come from the States, now similarly my V15E stylii) and the SME is like an old Lotus car - great when it's going but needs tuning every few hours for maximum results.
(Of course, there was always the Revox deck with parallel tracking arm - I saw it demonstrated many moons ago by a guy hitting the table it was standing on with his shoe with no skipping. http://www.vinylengine.com/phpBB2/album_cat.php?cat_id=69 - it might not sound good, but it looks really cool!)

For sidefills, can we have two enormous things of a type that might be venerated as Gods by the inhabitants of Easter Island, capable of reaching volumes that would make Beelzebub soil his pants.

As we have a bit of a tt geek thread going on here is a pic of my beloved 401.Currently it is mounted in an offcut of kitchen worktop as i just wanted to see how it got on with the rb250 tonearm while i sourced all the bits to restore the original sme arm.As it goes im very happy with how the rb250 matches the 401 so i think the mk2 plinth will have both arms mounted.

Cor that brings back memories. Have you sussed out how the speed fine tune works yet?  Think eddy current.
Do you still have the printed disc that goes in the centre of the rubber mat?

Yep i have fully striped and rebuilt it including a complete strip down of the electric motor and that really was a nightmare job to get it all properly aligned again.(this comprissed of running the motor out of the chassis whilst listening with a stethoscope and hitting the two parts of the motor shell with the handle of a hammer untill it was as silent as possible).
I sadly dont have the printed disc and im not sure i have seen one? but i do have the manual, template and warranty card.
