Hiya
Just a quick question - is it safe to use my minirigs with them resting on their sides? Will this damage them at all?

Gaffa tape is like the force in Star Wars - there's a dark side and a light side and it holds the universe together

As great as the Minirig is, not a chance. A 2.1 setup can hit about 103 dB linear SPL peak at 1 metre.
Doubling that would get you an extra 6 dB, in a theoretically perfect world. Since we don't live in one of those, the distance offsets and spacing would bring that down a fair bit. Either way, that's only just over 90 dB average, right next to the speakers. At 30 metres, you're looking at 60 dB, which is already going to get lost in the typical background noise levels for a normal conversation, let alone a party. That's also without considering the people walking in front of the speakers, absorbing sound. You'd normally put your mains (constant directivity horn assumed) up high and angle them down to aim at the farthest listener, so that inverse distance law evens out the level front to back. To do that, you need directivity and headroom, since you're moving the source farther away from everyone, and unfortunately you don't have it in that setup. For what it's worth, I hung up several 'line arrays' of Minirigs at Outlook Festival a few years back, for people in the ticket exchange queue to listen to. It worked quite well, but each of them had 6 Minirigs (v1) connected, and there were 4 or 5 'hangs' from memory. Cool marketing concept, but even a single compression driver on a horn and a 12" woofer per side would give more consistent SPL and tonal response from front to back. Where are you based? If it’s in the UK, you could always look to book the Doppler Soundsystem, which is by the Minirig guys and still battery powered. Edited by toastyghost - 12 January 2022 at 7:06pm |

I’m getting married this year, and was wondering about how plausible it would be to use a Minirig based setup for the reception (venue is 100-150 people capacity, long oblong room, not too bothered if people at the far end have it quiet as long as it’s pretty effective for the first 30m or so. Currently have a 2.1 setup but quite happy to go up to something like a 4.2, for example. I use them loads both at home and for (much smaller, admittedly) other parties, so not bothered about overspending on them as it were.
If it’s relevant, music will be mostly the kind of guff you get at wedding receptions - Bon jovi or whatever. Later, and at other parties, it’s more likely to be Jeff Mills/Dave Clarke/Surgeon type techno. Edited by algy - 12 January 2022 at 6:22pm |

My sister has on my recommendation just purchased a rather fetching dark blue Minirig and I thought I would bring this post up from 2010 and say congratulations to Mr T for his sterling endeavour. From acorns..

Hmm, the more I think about it the more I realize it might be a stupid idea. I've just got a reply back from support where they confirmed even if it's not under warranty, they can offer a repair/battery replacement for a max of £40. The sub actually works totally fine, except the battery won't charge past 40/50%, so I was thinking of opening it up and seeing if there's anything obviously wrong.
Thanks a ton for your help - if I'm feeling confident I'll open it up.

Having pulled apart a minirig one to a degree from what i remember you remove the bolts an split it but it might be hard to do if there is double sided tape on the battery so you have to take your time. the main issue is the ports. I beleive they are on a plug and hopefully you can unplug them if not you would need to take a picture and usolder the cables.
What is it your trying to acheive? if you want to make sure its dried out split it as much as you can and carefully push tissue it to dry it with something not metalic. you could also fill it full of dry rice and then put it in another container and cover it with more rice for a coupe of days

Do you have any tips on taking apart the sub? Can I simply pull out the two inner parts through either end? Or do I need to remove cables first or something?

I just had someone pour Creme Soda INTO my Sub 3, is there any point in disassembling it? I don't want to damage anything in the process, but I live in South Africa so I can't really just send it in to be repaired.
Any ideas would be appreciated.

Minirig fix these at cost price. Max repair cost of £40. Difference between 2-3 isn't worth the upgrade - both are excellent. I don't know if any of my friends origin minirigs failing, but several 2s have gone in for repair. Hopefully 3 is more reliable.

I would be interested in installing the speaker in a box and change the battery to something much bigger. The battery in mine is 11.1v 1500mah but weirdly they look alot bigger online. Not sure if its a li_ion or li-poly if anyone knows please say. Would like to swap it to a 5000mah

I saw a minirig in cash converters but the bluetooth wasnt working so got it for £30 instead of £80 not bad at all. Its green. i thought it was a 3 but it doesnt say 3 on the base so i assume its a 2
I wanted to build a motorbike mount. Because the speaker is wider than most i didnt think i could find a speaker mount that will fit it. I just found this and its exactly the same length as the minrig https:// http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373084123143 It straps down and has a silicone bit that the speaker sits on. It also has a gap that allows you to face the ports down only thing is the base might need drilling to prevent it filling up with water. you could also screw on end plates to stop the speaker moving but i doubt it will and the ports might hit the base and prevent this anyway. A strip of thin plastic on the top would give the rig a awning front and back preventing rain getting near it or i could just slide it inside a tube but that means fixing it in the tube somehow Does anyone have the 2 and the 3 is the 3 worth getting because im listening to the two right now and it sounds amazing Edited by number1barber - 05 August 2020 at 10:17pm |
