I guess it was good value until it died. Surface mount overheated and burned the pcb so now it's scrap.

Nice box and heatsinks for any power amp diy project. Class d for example.

If the tranny is still good, a set of aftermarket mosfet boards woud work well.

Crown/Amcron Powerbase 2 from 1987. Basically a striped-down budget version of the Microtec/Macrotec range. Same hardware, same PCBs, even has the same ODEP board as the Microtecs. In good shape this for 35 years old. All original inside.

Be seeing you.

Wow - that is clean. Where has it been used? Home stereo? They are/were quite popular here as a stereo amp for those that wanted a bit more uuumph than the typical hifi amp.

1987 was 35 years ago? Nah. Don't believe you Ian. Surely that was only a couple of months ago!

But that Powerbase does look in bloody good condition for that age.

I suspect it wasnt that clean when he aquired it, JBLman seems to be quite well practiced at cleaning and polishing.

Keep pushing on, things are gonna get better.

Actually it was that clean, as Earplug correctly wondered if it was being used as home stereo, it actually came from a home-studio. Apart from a few minor chips and marks to the outside, that is how it arrived.

Another one of Crowns Gerald Stanley's superb invention.  A pioneer in amplifier design.  Class I design, in very basic terms both high and low side mosfets switch on at the same time and dump the current into the large inductors at idle which cancel each other out so 0V at idle.  One side switches on and off faster than other side to pull the sine wave high or low. Negative feedback/ error correction taken at output through a 1;1 transformer.  Very high damping factor.

Crown K2.  This is my third K2 i've re-capped.  I can get it done in about 7 hours now.  Pic before I started work.

All electrolytic capacitors replaced (except main filter caps) with Panasonic FM and Nichicon PW. Potentiometers cleaned. Calibrated overlap/underlap and Gaussian filter for the inherent slight high frequency raise. All put back together. Load tested far exceeding specs. Distortion below specs. Amp very stable and sounding very good.
