I have no experience of the Ashly but I did have a 966 which I thought was excellent.

I'd say you're more likely to be able to grab a couple more BSS when you want to expand your racks though.

Going back to this, have to say that having both, I much prefer the Ashley, they sound better! Infact in terms of quality they're gunning for it's bigger brother.

I'd go BSS, I actually like the 966, I have 2 960sand a 4 966s but I have to say in the 10 years of devolopment BSS pretty much hit the 960 mark with the 966...
The Ashley is nice, but I find the BSS more precise and TBH I would sooner use a KT-410 Dual 5 band para, which I can usually get better results then a 30 band graph...
I tend to use cabe that require little or no EQ (Turbo TMS-4, Flood, FK1, DnB Q etc) so I don't wade in heavy with graphs, thaye cause havoc, now i have a load of Soundweb and 12ch of ADF-4000 I just don't do the graph thing, all a bit 80s to me...
To sumarise, for same cash, BSS every day if the Ashley is £75 cheaper then cool!!
:-)

I picked up all my Ashleys for about £100 each! That said I've had the opposite results, the Ashleys seem to sound better than the Opals when you move more than a few faders. Other than that I've not noticed any differences. Occasionally I do get engineers asking for the BSS when I've taken the Ashlys out but most soon accept them when they use them. They just need reassuring that they're just as good/better. It's weird how they just accept the speakers though knowing their our own design.
As for not really using eqs, how do you eq for a venue then? Our system in a good room is fairly flat. Edited by SamV - 24 December 2011 at 4:31am |

You have to be very carefull at the moment buying Ashley gear as it is one of the ranges of gear that the Chinese have decided to clone---Lots of it about but very few genuine--bit like the Shure SM58 cloning problem---They are made to look the same in all respects but they certainly do not sound the same.

i've never used ashley (or heard of) but i'd consider the BSS 960 as well as the 966 maybe you should dry hire some in to see what you prefere

I love the Ashleys!
The have up to 16db of gain reduction, do the BSS do this much? Genuine units are easy to find, you just by from the US! |

I liked the 966, thought it had a pleasing colouration to the sound too.
I preferred it as a FOH EQ for sculpting rather than cutting notches on wedges. Edited by philw44 - 24 December 2011 at 1:04pm |
