I've used aftermarket kits before to recone b&c 18tbx's , half the price of the factory parts!
Sound the same from what I can hear! |

Bit of an old saying - "if you want it to sound like a JBL fit a JBL kit - if you want it to sound like something else fit something else"
While talking about old sayings my all time speaker one is "pressed steel chassis for added suspension"

I'm thinking about the same!
I have a pile of about 10 18sound 18lw1400 drivers that needs recones. Perhaps the best is to try a single one first? Wonder what the best way is to test it? Probably to put an original in one box and the copy in another and listen carefully, then try to blow them:-) |

I've bought many recone kits from Speaker Exchange, where they offer the aftermarket recone kit. Overall, I am pleased with their kits. To keep costs down, they source their own parts to assemble kits to make them suitable for the speakers to be reconed. The do not manufacturer any of the parts, so they are limited to what is available to them from the various U.S.A. cone suppliers/voice coil suppliers/spider suppliers/etc. I highly highly highly doubt you will run into any installation issues with their recone kit, seeing as how it is a "standard" speaker with no funky parts---just a basic cone/coil/spider/dustcap. The coils I have received from them are dimensionally correct and perfectly concentric, and the spider has always been the correct diameter and stiffness. The one and only thing that (IMO) may vary is the cone. Sometimes they just cannot get a 100% replica of the original cone for whatever reason, so they substitute a cone that they feel would be best for that speaker. The cone may have a different thickness (and thus stiffness), it may have a different surround profile, it may have a different curvature, etc, but it will fit the speaker. Obviously this may affect the T/S parameters, but then again, they do state specifically that it is an aftermarket, not original, recone kit so they're not hiding anything. |

I wouldn´t buy that. You want a kit with the coil/spider already glued to the cone, otherwise it´s a huge PITA to get everything right.

Earplug is that kit you posted genuine or an aftermarket kit and what is the difference between both?
My kit is getting pre-assembled so I can drop it in. Chris Edited by mrdata - 16 January 2017 at 5:03pm |

From the price, I´d say aftermarket, but who knows. Maybe check with them.
I have bought bits from both companies before and both are reliable. In any case, if the kit is being pre-assembled then you should be ok. In the past, I have tried to recone with the kits in bits and it´s rarely worked. I now only use the assembled kits. A lot easier, really. |
