:-)
My mate in the W. Indies has just had a concrete workshop/secure storage thing built at the side of his house. Baically its about the size of a small container ... yeah could be used as a garage for his chunky Toyota 4 x 4 also. Now this thing is solid re-inforced concrete - about 5-6" thick ... roof and all. Front "aperture" is about 7' x 9' I should think. (Yeah - you know where this is going already don't you :-) ). Well I was sitting on the step smoking a cigarette one morning .... grin came over my face as I was gauping at the thing before he had the steel doors fitted. Yup - some whacky curvy internal bricks and mortar - brick up the small windows - judiciously place a 21" 1500W bass unit in there ...... and add a few kW of EV mid-tops .....yeah. There's a nice concreted area in front of this for 50-100 peeps to party/barbie, and the reaction you usually get from neighbours when you play loud reggae down there is approving grin, rather than calls to the polce like you'd mostly get here. Yeah !!!!! Any hornresp users with time on their hands ? What could _that_ play down to ? What kind of SPL :-) ? I reckon a hard thump on a bass drum through that would blow out candles half way up the road :-) |

Don't really know about horn calculations .... is there a rule of thumb for approx. throat diameter vs. bottom frequency response ? |

No.
RCA made a 30hz horn that used a 2" throat driver (WE594) , it worked fine from about
40hz~12Khz. RCA also made a 1-1/2" throat driver that had a 6" cone driving it (1428B), that sounded real natural and had a lot of output.
It's all about taper rate and mouth area. Throat size only limits how much power you can run into it. The WE555 was the 5/8" throat driver used on the WE15A horn, it had a 2" aluminum diaphragm and handled 5W at 100hz, later versions handled 10W above 200hz.

Sorry - I meant mouth area, not throat size. Presumably (if using the whole volume of an enclosure, taper rate could be derived from that, as long there's not too much constraint on _how_ its physically constructed - yes ? Errr.... hope that makes sense. |

Sorry, that is the Cogent adaptation of the RCA MI-1428B by Rich Drysdale with a field coil and a carbon fiber diaphragm (RCA used a phenolic). Horns by RCA fan (Bill Woods).

What size the workshop? You could build a gigantic super scoop with eight 18" driver and go down low, low, low!!! Or a giant tapper horn... |
